Book Description:

When pampered Jacqueline Abington secretly elopes with the family gardener, she asks another woman to take her place on the much anticipated maiden voyage of the Titanic. Tessa Bowen hails from a poor corner of London but has been granted the opportunity of a lifetime—a ticket to sail to America aboard a famed vessel. But there’s a catch: she must assume Jacqueline’s identity.

For the first time in her life, Tessa stays in luxurious quarters, dresses in elegant gowns, and dines with prestigious people. Then a wealthy American man takes an interest in her, and Tessa struggles to keep up the ruse as she begins falling for him. When tragedy strikes, the game is up, and two women’s lives are forever changed.

My Overall Feeling of the Book:

I thought the premise of this book was really interesting but the flow wasn't what I would have liked.  The first part of the book seemed to drag when I would have liked to get to the part involving the Titanic.  Then the whole Titanic tragedy seemed to move too quickly.

The descriptions of the setting, the people, clothing and ship were amazing in detail.  I could picture everything, from the barnyard to the dining room, in my mind clearly as I read.

My Favorite Character:

I didn't really have a favorite character with this book.  The Titanic and its story took center stage for me.

My Favorite Scene:

My favorite scene was when the Titanic pulled out of the dock.  The people on the dock were just as excited to be there as the people on the ship were.  It was a huge celebration.  I found it very emotional knowing what was to come.

My Favorite Sentence/Paragraph:

To her right several women decked out in furs and jewels stood at the railing, waving their lace handkerchiefs and smiling.   From somewhere off in the distance the band continued to play its merry tune.  Then, as the song ended, everything fell eerily silent.  She could sense the breathlessness in the people at the railing as they waited for Titanic to press her way toward the mighty Atlantic.

It Would Have Been Better If:

I found it difficult to believe that a girl who had been raised on a pig farm would be able to take the place of a girl that was raised to be part of the aristocrasy in two weeks time.  Her speech/accent alone would give her away.

I Would Recommend This Book To:

Titanic buffs, fashion designers, history lovers.

  1. What an interesting story! We have been on 3 cruises and love them :) I am not such a fan of small boats (I get a bit sea sick) but on the big ships I feel fine. We are really wanting to go on an Alaskan Cruise!

  10. I've never been on a cruise but I did take a boat from Wales to Ireland on my senior trip. The Irish Sea was choppy so I was feeling a woozy! I'm a little afraid of being over water.
