Book Review ~ A Pioneer Christmas ~ 12/29/16

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
17214098
Blurb:
The wild and untamed lands of America called to the brave and determined pioneers who desired a new way of life. Faced with primitive lodgings--a cave, a dugout, a sod house, a barn--settlers face their first Christmas in a new land with both trepidation and hope. From the mountains of North Carolina to the woods of Michigan, across the plains of Oklahoma and deserts of Arizona, these settlers soon learned that wherever the heart dwells, Christmas and romance can find a place to call home.
In this exclusive collection of nine Christmas romances, readers will relive a pioneer Christmas with all its challenges and delights as penned by some of Christian fiction's beloved authors, including bestselling authors Margaret Brownley and Lauraine Snelling.
1781 North Carolina - Defending Truth by Shannon McNear
1820 Ohio - The Calling by Kathleen Fuller
1830 Michigan Territory - A Silent Night by Anna Urquhart
1862 Nebraska Territory - A Pony Express Christmas by Margaret Brownley
1867 Arizona Territory - A Christmas Castle by Cynthia Hickey
1875 Dakota Territory - The Cowboy's Angel by Lauraine Snelling
1885 Dakota Territory - A Badlands Christmas by Marcia Gruver
1889 Oklahoma Territory - Buckskin Bride by Vickie McDonough
1897 Alaska - The Gold Rush Christmas by Michelle Ule
Filled with inspiration and faith, each story will become a treasure to be enjoyed again each holiday season.
My Thoughts:
For me, this has been the year of Christmas novellas.
This book contained 9, yes 9, Christmas stories.
I have to say that although I enjoyed reading the stories, I wished they were a bit longer.  Maybe I'm just ready to sink my teeth into a full-length novel.
Book Review ~ Sleigh Belles by Janice Hanna ~ 12/22/16
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

14504761

Blurb:

From Savannah to Montana... In 1916, Southern belle Alanna Lessing travels to Montana on a mission--to rescue her older sister from the influence of suffragettes and bring her back home to Savannah where she belongs. Alanna fears that her sister, Margaret, has allowed herself to be swept away by these newfangled beliefs.

The Christmas season is drawing near, and sleigh bells are ringing among the snow-covered peaks. The charming town of Missoula begins to grow on Alanna, and so do a few of its inhabitants--particularly neighboring rancher Tanner Jacobs. Alanna takes it upon herself to turn Tanner into a true Southern gentleman. He plays along, in part because he likes being near her, and in part because he's intrigued by her very different way of life. Will their differences bind their hearts, or forever keep them apart?

My Thoughts:

I've always been a fan of Janice Hanna's stories.  She writes fun, historical romances and those are my favorites!

At first, I was a little bit put off by Alanna's "Southern Belle"-ness.  But as the story progressed she came to realize what was important wasn't the outward appearances, but what was in the heart.

I liked Tanner from the get-go!  Sigh...  lol  I couldn't have asked for a better hero for this story.

I really enjoyed all the descriptiveness of the Montana scenery.  It truly sounds breathtaking.

I do have a pet peeve, though.  The cover shows a girl skating and while they did talk about skating at one point, they didn't actually ice-skate in the novel.  I strongly dislike when the cover doesn't match up with the telling of the story.  Just a little pet peeve.  It wasn't anything that distracted from the story or my enjoyment of reading it

Now I have to try to find the other books in the "Belles & Whistles" series!

Book Review ~ LFYI Frost, Minnesota by Judy Baer ~ 12/15/16

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
17569744
Blurb:
When Jack returns home to Minnesota, he meets the town’s newcomer. She’s bubbly, beautiful . . . and his latest adversary.
Considering that her name is Merry Noel Blake and she was born on Christmas Eve, it’s not surprising that Frost, Minnesota’s newest resident is crazy about the holiday. She has single-handedly convinced the entire town to help her turn Frost into a Christmas destination; there’s a tableau of the stable in Bethlehem, a concert, many events at the church, and Merry’s own holiday boutique.
Jack Frost has always tried to live down his whimsical name—a gift from his playful parents—and he does his best to deter Merry from making what he considers a kitschy mockery of the town and the season. But she believes that below Jack’s frosty exterior is a warm heart—and that she is the one to thaw it.
My Thoughts:
So far this Christmas, this has been my favorite read!
At first, I was a little iffy on the main characters.  Jack Frost seemed so superficial and Merry Blake seemed a bit too over the top sappy.
But, as I read their stories and got to "know" them, I came to love their characters.
I also came to love Frost, Minnesota.  They had so many wonderful celebrations and traditions that were so special.
I, too, live in a small town, so this book was near and dear to my heart :)
If you get a chance,  this was a great Christmas read!
Blurb:
Spend a heartfelt Christmas on Schooley’s Mountain as four generations make a house a home. Carpenter Stephan Yost vows to build a precocious spinster a home by Christmas. Civil War widow Mary Ann Plum learns the greatest peace on earth comes from giving and receiving love. Olympia Paris must protect the orphanage she grew up in from a man intending to play Father Christmas to most of the town. Joy Benucci turns to a modern-day Scrooge to save a transitional home for foster kids. Will Christmas be a season of miracles in their lives?
My Thoughts:
First, I want to say that after reading this book, I have completed my Goodreads 2016 Challenge to read 52 books this year!!!  So excited!!
As for the book itself, it was so endearing.
I loved all four novellas equally.  They were so wonderfully written and such sweet stories.
I loved that the house built in the first novella set the stage for the rest of the book.  It was so interesting to think about the history of the house and the different residents who called it home.
I'm really enjoying the season and especially reading these Christmas stories.  And it is even flurrying!  I'm getting in the Christmas Spirit!
There’s only one unfinished piece of business—an unsatisfied customer for whom she needs to set things right. The question is: will Lennox Bailey allow her to make amends?
My Thoughts:
This was my first Christmas themed read of the holiday season.  I was so excited when it came in the mail along with a few other Christmassy books!
I love Christmas.  I love Historical Fiction.  I love Mail-Order Bride stories.
This was a sweet collection of mail-order bride novellas.  Each story was unique and well written.
I especially liked "The Prodigal Groom".  I wish it would have continued on but alas it was a novella and therefore short and to the point.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading about these four couples and their love stories set in the Christmas season.  I look forward to reading more Christmas themed books over the holidays :)
Book Review ~ Torchlight by Lisa Tawn Bergren ~ 11/24/16
Blurb:
After inheriting her family’s lighthouse and mansion, heiress Julia Rierdon--sister of Jake Rierdon (Refuge)--travels to the coast of Maine to restore the estate and turn it into a lavish inn. Temporarily separated from her wealthy fiancé, Julia turns to a mysterious stranger for assistance.
Motorcycle-riding handyman Trevor Kenbridge is gorgeous, infuriating…and just the man she needs to help her prepare her inn. Could he also be the right man to claim her heart?
My Thoughts:
This is the second book in the "Full Circle" series.
I thought I would love this book.  It is, after all, a book about renovating a mansion near a lighthouse.  And there was reading of great-great's diaries.  And a handsome handyman.
But...
It somehow fell a little flat for me.
I liked the story well enough but I thought there could be more details about the parts I found interesting.  Such as the renovations and romance.  That might just have been personal preferences though.
I also was bit annoyed with Julia.  Even though I knew she had a "boyfriend" back in California, she was so hard on Trevor.  I think the romance could have used a little more work instead of being so abrupt at the end.
Still, if you like lighthouses and family history, it was worth reading and I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
Book Review ~ The Rose of Winslow Street by Elizabeth Camden ~ 11/17/16
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

11547872

Blurb:

The last thing Libby Sawyer and her father expected upon their return from their summer home was to find strangers inhabiting a house that had been in their family for decades. Widower Michael Dobrescu brought his family from Romania to the town of Colden, Massachusetts with a singular purpose: to claim the house willed to him long ago. Since neither party has any intention of giving up their claim, a fierce legal battle ensues between the two families.

When important documents go missing from the house, Libby suspects Michael is the culprit. Determined to discover the truth behind the stolen papers, Libby investigates, only to find more layers of mystery surrounding Michael and his family. Despite their rivalry, Libby finds herself developing feelings for this man with the mysterious past.

As a decision about the house looms in the courts, Libby must weigh the risks of choosing to remain loyal to her family or give her heart to a man whose intentions and affections are less than certain.

My Thoughts:

This book hooked me.  I stayed up way too late to finish reading it because I didn't want to put it down.  I wanted to know how the story would evolve and how it would end!

The plot was amazing!  Unlike any that I've ever read.  A Romanian warrior and a Massachusetts gentlewoman make a strange combination!

Michael was everything I would want in a hero.  He was strong, masculine, protective and nurturing, all at the same time.

Libby was a great leading lady.  She was kind, caring, compassionate and from what I deduced, dyslexic.  She thought this was an insurmountable obstacle because she had been told since childhood that it was a mental flaw.

I loved how the story unfolded.  I loved the mystery, the legal battle, the quiet times and especially the love story.

You NEED to read this book!

Book Review ~ Refuge by Lisa Tawn Bergren ~ 11/10/16

Blurb:

When Rachel Johanssen dared Beth Morgan to answer a personal ad in The Rancher’s Journal, she never thought her citified friend would become a bona fide rancher’s wife. Now Rachel, too, is falling in love with the glorious valley…as well as with Dirk Tanner, a rugged rancher who makes it his home.

Rachel isn’t the only San Franciscan newly drawn to the Elk Horn Valley. Jake Rierdon, son of a San Francisco client, has taken a shine to ranch life too--and to beautiful young Emily Walker. But will threats from the present and the past destroy any chance the couples have to build a future?

My Thoughts:

This is the very first book in the "Full Circle" series.  I was surprised to find out that this book is actually in two parts.  One tells Rachel's story and the other tells Emily's story.  Basically, two short-stories in one book.

RACHEL

As with most books in a new series there are some learning curves such as getting to know the characters, setting, etc.  With this book, it jumps right into the plot.  I had to learn quickly who was who and what was what.

I loved the main characters but was wishing the story was a bit longer to get to know them better before the climax and ending.

EMILY

By the time I was reading about Emily, I felt that I had gotten to know the characters and the surroundings as they were basically the same as Rachel's story.

I felt more for Emily and Jake.  Maybe because I had met Jake in the first part and really like him then.

Emily's past was haunting and it was touching to read how she let herself heal with God's help.

~~~~~~
Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book and look forward to reading Book 2 about Jake's sister.  Lucky me, it is already on my bookshelf!
Book Review ~ Strand of Deception by Robin Caroll ~ 11/3/16
Blurb:
When Gina Ford, the daughter of a prominent Tennessee politician, goes missing from the University of Memphis a week after another girl was murdered on the same campus, police call in the FBI. Nick Hagar, married to his job as Special Agent in Charge, is assigned to the case, and when Gina’s body is found, her father demands justice.
Maddie Baxter is the forensic expert running DNA tests from the crime scene. When they come back without a match, Nick asks her to do a familial DNA run that yields a shocking result: the prime suspect is Adam Alexander, the very same guy who broke Maddie’s heart when she was in college.
But do scientific advancements tell the whole story? Strand of Deception offers romance, suspense, and a lively debate about the impact of DNA testing, for better or worse, on the United States justice system.
My Thoughts:
This book is the third book in the "Justice Seekers" series.  All three were excellent!  I'm a bit sorry to see this series come to an end.
I thoroughly enjoyed Maddie and Nick's story.  They both were perfect lead characters.  Maddie had the smarts and apparently Nick is a hunk of a man :)
At times, things got a bit technical but not enough to make it difficult to follow.
I love crime dramas with the right amount of romance, so this book (in fact - this whole series) was right up my alley.  I loved it!
I think I've found a favorite new genre, although historical is still high up on my list!  I do love to have variety in my reading, though.  It keeps it interesting.
I can't wait to read more books from this author!
Book Review ~ Twice Promised by Maggie Brendan ~ 10/27/16
Blurb:
Greta Olsen arrives in Central City, Colorado, as a mail-order bride, expecting to marry Jess Gifford, the man she's come to know through his tender letters. But when she meets Cora Johnson, she discovers she's not the only bride waiting at the train station for Jess.
Already shocked to find they must compete for Jess's affection, the young women can hardly believe it when not Jess but his brother Zach picks them up from the station--and reveals that Jess knows nothing about any mail-order bride, let alone two. Will either bride make the match she hopes for?
Filled with surprises, misunderstandings, and tender romance, Twice Promised is the story of how two unlikely women become twice blessed.
My Thoughts:
I first met Greta Olsen in "Deeply Devoted" the first book of the "Blue Willow Brides" series.  She was young and a bit of a brat.  I was very interested to find out how she "turned out" as she grew up and matured.
This book had me hooked from the time I found out that there were two mail-order-brides for one man.  I couldn't wait to read how things would transpire.  After all, there were two brides and two brothers!
I admit that I had to turn to the back page to see how it turned out.  I know, bad girl!  Even though I knew who would end up with who, I was delighted to continue reading to see how the author would bring about the ending.
I especially loved the last third of the book but I can't really tell you why without giving too much away.  Let's just say that the two brides turn the tables on the brothers!
 The third book in the "Blue Willow Brides" series is about Anna, the youngest sister.  I can't wait to get my hands on it!
Book Review ~ To Write a Wrong by Robin Caroll ~ 10/20/16
Blurb:
In Angola State Penitentiary, a man is serving time for a crime he didn’t commit. Riley Baxter is an eager reporter desperate for a story to make a name for herself. When she stumbles upon the daughter of the incarcerated man, Riley sees a little too much of herself in the teen, and vows to help prove her father’s innocence.
At the same time, Hayden Simpson has his hands full with keeping his little sister in line, worrying about his job as Police Commissioner, and dealing with his past emotional baggage. The last thing he needs is someone blowing the lid off his emotional bucket. But when Riley Baxter storms into his life, struggling to understand why God would let bad things happen to good people, Hayden has no choice but to follow his heart.
Now, Riley and Hayden must work together to uncover the truth of the past . . . before someone shuts Riley up for good.
My Thoughts:
I met Riley and Hayden in Book 1 of this series, Injustice for All.  Riley was a bit of a brat and Hayden was absolutely scrumptious!
This made it a bit hard for me to see them getting together in this book.  I wasn't sure I would like Riley as the heroine and wasn't sure how the author would bring her character across as changed.
However, Robin Caroll, is a masterful story-teller and managed to make me like Riley and love Hayden even more.
I'm loving this series of murder mystery/romances.  I can honestly say that I didn't figure out who was the mastermind behind it all until shortly before it was revealed.  I liked that there weren't so many hints that it was easily figured out from the beginning.
Lucky me, I have the third and final book of this series on my bookshelf!
Book Review ~ Deeply Devoted by Maggie Brendan ~ 10/13/16
Blurb:
When Catharine Olsen leaves Holland for Wyoming as a mail-order bride, she brings some extra baggage with her: two sisters, her mother's set of Blue Willow china, and a tragic past. As she steps off the train, Peter Andersen is glad to see that she is everything her letters showed her to be. But he is a bit perturbed by her unexpected companions. How will he support them all? And what other secrets might Catharine be keeping from him?
Filled with sweet romance and vivid characters, Deeply Devoted highlights a clash of cultures as a highborn European and a simple wheat farmer learn to love one another and trust God with the past--and the future.
My Thoughts:
What to say about this book????
It was a bit too mushy and touchy-feely for me in the beginning with the mail-order bride and groom seemingly in love from the start.  But...the author hinted at many secrets being withheld so I kept reading out of curiosity to see if I could figure it out before the author clued me in.
I did figure out some of the secrets but wasn't fully prepared for the whole truth.
The groom wasn't either!
In came the conflict and an over-bearing mother-in-law.
I'm really glad I kept reading as this was a good set-up book for the rest of the series of the "Blue Willow Brides".  I look forward to reading more about Anna and Greta the younger sisters of Catharine.  I already have one of the books on my shelf and look forward to getting my hands on the third.
Book Review ~ A Heart's Rebellion by Ruth Axtell ~ 10/6/16
Blurb:
Dutiful Jessamine Barry is tired of waiting patiently for a man to decide her future. So even though Lancelot Marfleet, second son of an aristocrat, is taking an interest in her during the London season, she refuses to consider him as a suitor. Instead, she's ready to take fashionable society by storm--and finds a rakish young man all too willing to help her do it.
When things go too far, Jessamine will learn that the man who is faithful through thick and thin is more worthy than the one who speaks pretty words. But will her disgrace keep Lance from reconsidering her as a wife?
And when tragedy strikes and Lance becomes his father's heir and a titled gentleman, will he think she only wants him now because of his title?
My Thoughts:
I love regency romance novels.  I enjoyed the first book in the series and I really wanted to love THIS book.  However, something just fell flat for me.
I didn't like the characters.  The leading lady was so vain and snobby I couldn't stand it!  The hero was a bit better but was still somewhat wishy-washy, in my opinion.
The action did pick up about 2/3 of the way through but I still found myself skimming over paragraphs and just generally wanting to be done reading the book so I could move on to the next.
This book just wasn't for me.  Not a favorite.
Book Review ~ Injustice for All by Robin Caroll ~ 9/29/16
Blurb:
A federal judge lies bleeding on his office floor, betrayed by a most unlikely source—people who helped him bring criminals to justice. Now, why would someone working for the FBI need to disappear after witnessing this crime?
When Remington Wyatt sees her godfather’s murder, she recognizes the killers and knows it’s only a matter of time before they come to silence her. She must do the only thing possible to stay alive . . . run.
FBI agent Rafe Baxter is serious about his career, and solving a cold case involving a federal judge’s death puts him in line for the promotion he so desires. But the case leads him to the small town of Hopewell, Louisiana, where some secrets seem inextricably hidden deep within the bayou.
Injustice for All explores what happens when everything a person believes in is utterly destroyed. Who can you trust?
My Thoughts:
I was in a major, I mean MAJOR, reading slump.  I tried several different genres to get me snapped out of it but they didn't work.
Until....
I picked up this book!
If you read my TEASER TUESDAY, you can tell that it is action packed from the very first line.
I absolutely had the hardest time putting this book down.  I loved the characters and the setting.  It was interesting to read a book based near the bayou.
The great thing is that I have the next 2 books of this series on my bookshelf!  I'm so very excited to read Book 2 of the "Justice Seekers" series.
I'm so glad I picked up this book :)
