Book Review ~ The Austen Escape by Katherine Reay

~~~~~~~~~~~~
 Blurb:
After years of following her best friend’s lead, Mary Davies finds a whimsical trip back to Austen’s Regency England paves the way towards a new future.
Mary Davies lives and works in Austin, Texas, as an industrial engineer. She has an orderly and productive life, a job and colleagues that she enjoys—particularly a certain adorable, intelligent, and hilarious consultant. But something is missing for Mary. When her estranged and emotionally fragile childhood friend Isabel Dwyer offers Mary a two-week stay in a gorgeous manor house in Bath, Mary reluctantly agrees to come along, in hopes that the holiday will shake up her quiet life in just the right ways. But Mary gets more than she bargained for when Isabel loses her memory and fully believes that she lives in Regency England. Mary becomes dependent on a household of strangers to take care of Isabel until she wakes up.
With Mary in charge and surrounded by new friends, Isabel rests and enjoys the leisure of a Regency lady. But life gets even more complicated when Mary makes the discovery that her life and Isabel’s have intersected in more ways that she knew, and she finds herself caught between who Isabel was, who she seems to be, and the man who stands between them. Outings are undertaken, misunderstandings play out, and dancing ensues as this triangle works out their lives and hearts among a company of clever, well-informed people who have a great deal of conversation.
My Thoughts:
 Katherine Reay is a new-to-me author.  I've seen her books floating around and even though I love Jane Austen and everything Austen-esque, I was reluctant to pick up one of the books to read.  I really don't know why.  I guess I didn't want to be disappointed.
I was crazy!
Not only was I not disappointed, I loved this book!
I loved the backstory between Mary and Isabel.  I loved Mary's scientific mind meeting the fictional world that Jane Austen penned.  I loved the "experience" of an Austen vacation.  I loved it all!  Especially the push and pull of the romance involved.
Mary's character was so quirky and fun!  At times she was full of courage and others she was confused and didn't know what in the world she was doing.  Like I said:  so much fun!
Isabel's character was one I loved to hate and I really didn't understand how forgiving Mary was of her actions.  Especially when it came to "TCG".  (You'll have to read it to find out! :)
I can honestly say that I didn't want this story to end.  I'll definitely be picking up more of Reay's novels in the future :)
Come join Diary of a SAHM for Happy Homemaker Monday.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This was truly the first week that I've actually had what felt like Summer Vacation.  We've been so busy!  But, before you know it, it will be time to start back-to-school shopping...

In other news, Kaylee will be going to take her Driver's Test Friday.  We've been practicing and I think she's ready!  If you could, please say a prayer that she passes.

The weather outside is::::

VERY HOT and muggy here in Southern Pennsylvania.  Our AC has been running non-stop.  Too many more days like this with no relief and I'll be longing for FALL!

On my breakfast plate:

As I look around the house::::

Laundry and dishes are done.  I still have some blankets to wash from our camping trip.  I'm hoping to get all caught up with them this week.

Our riding mower went caput :(  The motor is done for :(  So, we've been push mowing the past two week's until it is decided what to do next.  Buy a new motor or push mow the rest of the summer.  Yikes!

Thankful Thursday ~ 7/11/19

~Hubby's vacation week!  Last week was all about family time.  The number of summer vacation we get to spend with our girls is dwindling as they grow up and that makes me a bit sad but we had a great week :)

~Lake Tobias!  Lake Tobias is a wildlife park in Halifax, PA.  I had never heard of it before Laken went on a field trip to there this past school year.  We made the 3 hour drive to Lake Tobias Wildlife Park so Laken could be our tour guide.  We even went on a safari where the animal came right up to the safari vehicle.  It was amazing to see all the animals and so close :)

~The Meg!  One evening we rented a movie from the Redbox and had a Family Movie night complete with Twizzlers :)  The Meg was a great movie but don't watch it if you already have a fear of sharks!  :)

~Ice Cream!  Of course we hit up our favorite ice cream spot a few times while on vacation.  Sundae's has THE BEST peanut butter sundae I've ever had.  Yummm…  The flavor of the week was Black Raspberry.  It switched over to Cotton Candy on Monday.  Laken is pleading for another ice cream trip as Cotton Candy is her FAVORITE :)

~Camping!  We went tent camping for 3 days and 2 nights at Shawnee State Park here in PA.  We set up two tents and 4 air mattresses in 1.5 hours flat!  It was a good thing we were so quick about it because a rain shower came not long after the last tent peg was pounded into the ground.  We had so much fun camping.  It was a nice relaxing time of fishing, reading, hiking and sitting around the campfire.  I can't wait to go again :)

What are you thankful for today?

Book Review ~ The Pursuit of Lucy Banning by Olivia Newport

~~~~~~~~~~~~
 Blurb:
Lucy Banning may live on the exclusive Prairie Avenue among Chicago's rich and famous, but her heart lies elsewhere. Expected to marry an up-and-coming banker from a respected family, Lucy fears she will be forced to abandon her charity work--and the classes she is secretly taking at the newly opened University of Chicago.
When she meets an unconventional young architect who is working on plans for the upcoming 1893 World's Fair, Lucy imagines a life lived on her own terms. Can she break away from her family's expectations? And will she ever be loved for who she truly is?
Readers will love being swept away into a world of mansions, secrets, and romance as they follow Lucy through the streets of the Windy City during one of the most exciting times in the city's history.
From opulent upper-class homes to the well-worn rooms of an orphanage, Olivia Newport breathes life and romance into the pages of history--and everyone is invited.
My Thoughts:
I honestly can't remember if I've read anything from this author before or if she is a new-to-me author.  However, I love her writing style!  It kept me turning the pages.
I loved the historical setting and learning about the World Fair.  The social restrictions for women during that time period well depicted.  I also loved the upstairs/downstairs feel to the novel.
In the beginning of the book I just wanted Lucy to stand up for herself and quit sneaking around in order to follow her calling.  As the story went on, I could see how the author was evolving the character of Lucy.  I loved seeing her bloom and stand up for herself.
I do wish that I could have gotten to know Will a bit better.  He was almost a secondary character at certain points where I would have liked the author to delve into his thoughts and actions a little more.
I enjoyed Charlotte's side story and look forward to reading more about her very soon.
This is the first book of the "Avenue of Dreams" series and lucky for me, I have books 2 and 3 on my TBR shelf!
Wednesday Medley ~ 7/3/19
http://tdorsaneo.blogspot.com/
Come join Terri @ Your Friend From Florida every Wednesday.  She comes up with the questions and we answer them ;)
Everything below this line is from the line is from the National Calendar website.
INDEPENDENCE DAY – July 4
Independence Day July 4
INDEPENDENCE DAY
Each year on July 4th, the United States celebrates Independence Day. This federal holiday commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain.
For nearly 250 years, the country has been celebrating a day in history that inspires us still today. On July 4th, speeches and ceremonies are held across the nation. Across the country, people crowd cities for parades and festivals. Streets are decked out in red, white and blue bunting and flags.
While families and friends gather for some of the most mouthwatering food – large picnics and barbecues, local fairs provide a taste of culture and mom’s home cooking, too. With so many converging on their hometowns, family and school reunions take place.
Fire Works
Before the day is over, many communities hold spectacular fireworks displays re-enact moments of victory. Patriotic music accompanies the performance while spectators view the show from blankets strewn along capital lawns or from boats floating in bays. Whether out National Anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner” or “God Bless America,” many will sing along.  In some locations, music will be played by a live orchestra or band, while in other areas it’s pre-recorded. Some of the most popular on the playlist are “America the Beautiful,” “My Country, Tis of Thee,” “This Land Is Your Land,”  “Stars and Stripes Forever,”  “God Bless the U.S.A.,” “Yankee Doodle” and “Dixie.”
In some parts of the country, people will shoot their own fireworks. Children delight in the bright colors and sparklers. They roast marshmallows and make s’mores.
HOW TO OBSERVE INDEPENDENCE DAY
  • At noon, a “Salute to the Union” is fired, each July 4th, by any capable military base.  This is a salute of one gun for each state in the United States.
  • In 2009, New York City hosted the largest fireworks display in the country.
  • Held since 1785, the Bristol Fourth of July Parade in Bristol, Rhode Island is the oldest continuous Independence Day celebration in the United States.
Use #IndependenceDay, #July4th, #4thOfJuly, FourthOfJuly to share your celebrations on social media.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Everything above this line is from the line is from the National Calendar website.
1.  Please share a favorite July 4th memory with us.
One July 4th memory was the first 4th that the Hubby and I were dating.  It was the first time that I didn't go to the fireworks with my family and instead went with him.  Another memory is when our oldest was first born and we watched the fireworks out the window because she was just a few weeks old :)
2.  How do you plan to spend tomorrow?  If you are working, will you celebrate later?
We will be having a picnic at my brother and SIL's and then we are going camping!  So excited to go camping!
3.  Is there a favorite food always reserved for your 4th of July celebration?
Just the normal picnic-y foods :)
4.  In Florida, you can buy all kinds of fireworks, including some that fly high and burst into pretty cascades.  Are fireworks legal in your state/community and does anyone you know put on a display for your neighborhood?
My cousin started a tradition last year of putting off fireworks.  He did a great job!
5.  Do you have a favorite movie that you always watch sometime during the 4th of July?
No, not really...
6.  Share something from your week, please.
Today is my Dad's 72nd birthday!  He was almost a firecracker baby :)
Book Review ~ Vendetta by Lisa Harris
~~~~~~~~~~~~

 Blurb:

No one needs to push Nikki Boyd to excel on the Tennessee Missing Persons Task Force. The case of her own missing sister, still unsolved after ten years, is the driving force in her work. When a Polaroid photo of a missing girl shows up at a crime scene, Nikki quickly recognizes similarities to the past. The closer she gets to the abductor, the more she feels this case has become personal, and she is not the hunter . . . but the hunted.

With this explosive first book in The Nikki Boyd Files, award-winning author Lisa Harris takes you on a fast-paced pursuit of justice that will have you holding your breath until the heart-stopping finish.

My Thoughts:

I've loved other books I've read by Lisa Harris, so I was excited to dig into "Vendetta" the first book in "The Nikki Boyd Files".

I flew through this book!  It was so suspenseful and dramatic that I couldn't stop reading until I found out if Nikki found the missing girl alive!  And, no, I'm not telling!

The front of the book says, "The First 48 Hours Are the Most Critical" and I'm amazed that the whole book took place within those 48 hours without feeling rushed.

I loved how piece-by-piece the author brought about the mystery and the solution to the story with just the barest hint of a romance at the very end.

This book left me wanting to read more which is a very good sign with a series.  I want to know more about Nikki and where her story goes next.

Loved it!
