About the Book

Frittered Moments

Title: Frittered Moments
Series:
Love and Danger in St. Claire #5
Author:
Allison Pearl
Publisher:
Anaiah Press, LLC
Release Date:
October 23, 2023
Genre:
Romantic Suspense

Deputy US Marshal, Perry Cole is back in the small town of St. Claire, and he didn’t come alone. Joined by the FBI and a witness who could crack his case wide open, Perry hopes to finally track down one of the most elusive criminals he’s ever targeted. But just as the hunt begins, a murder derails his plans. Now he must partner with the cute-but-snarky Deputy Sheriff Erin Kaminski to find the killer. Perry quickly finds himself getting distracted by the feelings Erin stirs up in him, and if he doesn’t get his head back in the game, one of them may end up at the top of the murderer’s hit list.

The locals wanted someone else for the Deputy Sheriff position, but Erin Kaminski knows in her heart that St. Claire is where she’s meant to be. And finally, just as she becomes a familiar face to the locals, the FBI and US Marshals show up, making trouble. She wants them to do their job and leave, and so she becomes their local liaison. But when someone turns up dead, she wants to be the one calling the investigative shots. Instead, she’s partnered with the admittedly charming, but overly skeptical, marshal who thinks her faith is nothing but fantasy. With Perry’s constant questions and distracting lure, she needs to keep her head clear enough to see the danger creeping her way—or she’ll end up losing everything.

My Thoughts:

"Frittered Moments" by Allison Pearl really took me by great surprise!

From the cover, I was expecting a nice cozy mystery...  Instead I got a fast paced, high-energy, suspense-filled mystery!  A very pleasant surprise!

The dynamic between the male main character, Perry, and the female main character, Erin, was amazing.  I really enjoyed the collaboration of the U.S. Marshall and the small-town Sheriff Deputy.  Their banter was on point!

The faith theme was pleasantly prevalent and even though Perry was skeptical it was fun to read about his journey.

I thought the ending was well executed and wrapped all the details and questions up nicely.  I'm a reader who loves epilogues so I was very pleased to also get a glimpse into what happened after the roller coaster ride.

Allison Pearl is another new-to-me author but I'd LOVE to read more.  This book is part of the Love and Danger in St. Claire but can most definitely be read as a stand-alone novel as well.

"Frittered Moments" is a Christian suspense a bit of really fun romance.

I am very excited and thankful to review this book today!

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

Book Review and Giveaway ~ 70 NORTH by Kimberley Woodhouse ~ 10/18/2024

70 North JustRead Takeover + Review Blitz

Welcome to the Takeover + Review Blitz for 70 North by Kimberley Woodhouse hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

About the Book

70 North Title: 70 North
Series: Alaskan Cyber Hunters #3
Author: Kimberley Woodhouse
Publisher: Kregel Publications
Release Date: October 15, 2024
Genre: Christian Mystery & Suspense

The Cyber Solutions team has managed to stay one step ahead of the madman who has killed so many. From the original 26 Below cyberattack in Fairbanks to the 8 DOWN serial murders in Anchorage and beyond, they matched wits with the killer and stopped him from reaching his ultimate goals.

But final judgment is coming. And this time, there may be no defeating him.

David "Mac" McPherson has a personal stake in making sure this predator stays down for good. His family died in the cyberattack. Mac knows that God says "vengeance is mine"—but surely an exception can be made.

Surgeon Tracie Hunter is determined to stay sober and keep saving lives in Fairbanks, Alaska—even if it means being a little obsessive. After all, that same kind of determination is how she kept Mac alive after the murderer targeted him. And she won't let Mac run himself into the grave looking for payback; he's come to mean too much to her.

Then someone hacks into the system at Tracie's previous job as a medical examiner and frames her in a murder cover-up. There's no one else skilled enough to create a digital trail this incriminating—the killer is back in action, exploiting cybersecurity weaknesses to destroy lives. Can Mac stay focused and stop the next attack when his own vulnerability is exposed? Or will his need to make someone pay for his pain allow the maniac to pull ahead and win at last?

My Thoughts:

I was very excited to receive an advanced reader's copy of 70 NORTH by Kimberley Woodhouse.  I thought I was receiving an ebook but was delighted to receive a physical book in the mail.  Who doesn't love book mail?

I savored this book from beginning to end.  I was excited to start reading and sad when it was finished.

The characters were so relatable and imperfect which made for a perfect reading experience.  Mac, the male main character, had a ton of physical and emotional trauma that he was dealing with but he still relied on his faith to get him through.  Tracie, the female main character, had been through a lot as well but, like Mac, hadn't let it stop her from relying on God and prayer.

Speaking of prayer, there were some of the most beautiful prayers in this book and I loved it.  Even the quick but heartfelt "help me LORD" prayers were so effective in helping me to connect with the characters because there have been many times in my life where that was all I could say as well.

I was very curious to see if 70 NORTH could be read as a stand-alone book.  I'm happy to say that it was thoroughly enjoyable but I believe it would have been even better (if possible) if I had read 8 DOWN and 26 BELOW.  There were characters that I could have met even earlier and I'm sure I would have loved reading their stories as well!

This book is a Christian suspense with some romance that isn't overwhelming.  It was just right :)

I am very excited and thankful to review this book today!

Series:  Elite Guardians Savannah Book #3
Pages:  297
Date Published:  10/15/2024
Publisher:  Sunrise Publishing
Stars:  *****

 Blurb:

The truth might destroy them both…

The one thing that Former Army Ranger turned elite bodyguard Juliette Montgomery regrets is never telling fellow solider Caleb Styles her true feelings. But how could she? They were co-workers, and then the guy went and saved her life. And that turned out to be the one thing that cost them their relationship.

So Juliette has moved on, trying to forget Caleb—and her feelings.

Caleb hasn’t forgotten her either. But he has no idea she now lives in Savannah, Georgia…especially since his life is full as guardian of his niece, Ivy, after her parents were killed.

And then he discovers that his brilliant niece’s computer skills have attracted a notorious hacker group. More, when Ivy tracks the hackers, she endangers Caleb’s cyber-security company.

Enter his need for the Elite Guardians.

The last—very last—person Juliette thought she’d see again is Caleb Styles, let alone be assigned to protect him. And now, suddenly, the very last thing she needs is to let her heart take over. She must protect them both—which means ignoring…or trying to ignore—the attraction between them.

Caleb never understood why Juliette walked away from him…but he can’t deny that his feelings for her never died. Except maybe she doesn’t share those feelings because her only goal seems to be protecting Ivy. And, it’s probably for the best. After all, they need all their wits about them to find the hackers and unravel their plans.

And then they discover the hackers’ true intent—and it becomes a race against time. But it too late to protect their hearts from the truth?

An electrifying blend of suspense, chemistry, and unbreakable bonds, this romantic thriller is a must-read for fans of the Elite Guardian series.

My Thoughts:

*****

Wow!  What a roller coaster ride this book was!  There was jam packed action from beginning to end.  Just when I thought the story-line was settling down a bit...WHAM!... there was another suspenseful situation that made me stay up way past my bedtime.

Juliette and Caleb were so good together.  I loved how they could communicate with just a look!  It was so much fun to read about a female main character being the "protector".  Ivy, Caleb's niece, was a great character in and of herself, as well.

I've loved everything I've ever read by Lynette Eason and now Kelly Underwood is a favorite as well.

Guarding Truth is a contemporary, Christian, suspense novel that ticked all the boxes for me.  Most definitely deserving of a 5 star rating!

I am very excited and thankful to review this book today!

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

My Thoughts:

Wow!  Just, wow!

I always try to write my reviews as soon as I've finished a book so I can get my thoughts down while they are fresh in my mind.  Well, I just finished reading Inferno and I'm still reeling from all the action that took place, especially in the last few chapters!

I even stayed up past my bedtime to finish reading and find out for certain who the arsonist was.  I had my suspicions towards the end after a few clues were hinted at but I had to have them confirmed before I stopped reading for the night.

The characters were well-written and very relatable.  Julio and Samantha had a history which the author explained wonderfully and had me routing for them from beginning to end.  Even the secondary characters were fun!  I do hope to revisit Bristol and Romeo at some point in the future.

This is the 9th book in the Benson First Responders series.  There were mentions of characters from previous books but this was a very good stand-alone read.  I do want to go read more of this series now, though!

I am very excited and thankful to review this book today!

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

Book Review ~ Calculated Risk by Lynn Shannon

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Title:  Calculated Risk by Lynn Shannon
Series:  Triumph Over Adversity Book #1
Pages:  326
Date Published:  April 14, 2021
Publisher:  Creative Thoughts LLC
 Blurb:
He carries the burden of his mistakes.
The wounds on Jason Gonzalez’s body are nothing compared to the ones on his heart. The former Marine avoids getting close to anyone new, especially his gorgeous next-door neighbor. Until he hears a scream coming from her house in the middle of the night.
Her enemies are too numerous to count.
Addison Foster escaped an abusive marriage and has become an advocate for others. When an intruder breaks into her home and nearly kills her, Addison is rescued by an unlikely protector. But the threats against her aren’t over and she needs help.
Danger around every corner.
Jason makes it his mission to keep Addison safe, but keeping her out of his heart proves impossible. As the threats increase, there’s no room for mistakes. Will his calculated risk pay off or will it end in tragedy?
My Thoughts:
This was my second book in a row about military men with PTSD.  The first was a Clean Regency Romance and this was an Inspirational Contemporary Romantic Suspense.  So very different but with underlying common themes.
I really liked the characters of Jason and Addison and especially Connor.  I liked that they were acquainted an even friendly neighbors before the story started.  They already knew each other and had a neighborly relationship that flowed so well into the storyline.
I have to say that I had vibes about who the "suspect" was but didn't truly have it figured out until the end when all was revealed.
I enjoyed getting to know Nate and Kyle also and hope to read more about them soon.
This is my first book written by Lynn Shannon but I already have book 2 of the Triumph Over Tragedy series downloaded on my Kindle.
I downloaded this book from Kindle Unlimited.
Onto the next book!
Book Review ~ Deadly Proof by Rachel Dylan
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Title:  Deadly Proof by Rachel Dylan
Series:  Atlanta Justice Book #1
Pages:  320
Date Published:  September 5, 2017
Publisher:  Bethany House

 Blurb:

In the biggest case of her career, attorney Kate Sullivan is tapped as lead counsel to take on Mason Pharmaceutical because of a corporate cover-up related to its newest drug. After a whistleblower dies, Kate knows the stakes are much higher than her other lawsuits.

Former Army Ranger turned private investigator Landon James is still haunted by mistakes made while serving overseas. Trying to forget the past, he is hired by Kate to look into the whistleblower's allegation and soon suspects that the company may be engaging in a dangerous game for profit. He also soon finds himself falling for this passionate and earnest young lawyer.
Determined not to make the same mistakes, he's intent on keeping Kate safe, but as the case deepens, it appears someone is willing to risk everything—even murder—to keep the case from going to trial.

My Thoughts:

Rachel Dylan is a new-to-me author although I've seen many great things about her subsequent books.

I hadn't read a legal suspense novel in ages so the lingo took me a minute or two to place everything.  Luckily, I've seen enough legal TV shows that it didn't take long to get into the groove :)

I liked how the author explained everything as it was happening for us legalese challenged people.

Kate was a person who struggled with depression but the author didn't get into it very much.  I would have liked to see Kate's struggles a bit more as a person who struggles with anxiety and depression myself.  Landon also had struggles which were much more prevalent.

I enjoyed getting to know the setting and the characters.  I have a few ideas of what the rest of the books of the series will be about (at least I hope) but I look forward to seeing if I'm correct.

This was my first book by Rachel Dylan but I'm off to see if I can order more :)

Book Review ~ A Secret to Die For by Lisa Harris

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Title:  A Secret to Die For by Lisa Harris
Series:  N/A
Pages:  327
Date Published:  September 18, 2018
Publisher:  Revell
 Blurb:
Psychologist Grace Callahan has no idea that she has a secret--one worth killing for. But when she finds out one of her clients has been murdered, she quickly realizes that the computer security specialist wasn't simply suffering from paranoia.
Detective Nate Quinn has just been cleared for active duty after a bombing killed eighteen people, including his partner, and left him dealing with PTSD. His first case back on the job involves the murder of Stephen Shaw, and his only lead turns out to be an old friend, Grace Callahan--and her life is in grave danger. Someone believes Shaw gave his psychologist information before he died. Information they are willing to kill for.
With her signature pulse-pounding suspense, Lisa Harris takes readers deep into the heart of fear in this race against the clock.
My Thoughts:
This was my first book of 2020!
I decided to read an inspirational suspense novel next and Lisa Harris is one of my favorite authors for this genre.  I really enjoy her writing.
The fate of the Nation was resting in Nate's and Grace's hand and they didn't even know why!  It was definitely a mystery that needed solving and a murderer who needed brought to justice.
 Nate and Grace were both suffering from forms of PTSD and past hurts.  Somehow they found a way to push through their struggles and, of course, solve the case!
There was a lot of technical jargon in a few places that was a bit hard to follow and had to be read very carefully to understand but to some it would probably be easy to follow.  I'm no coding expert!
The conclusion was a bit surprising as far as who the "culprit' was.
I was also a bit surprised...spoiler...that the "l-word" was used after Nate and Grace were re-united for only a few days.  A few action-packed days, granted, but none-the less...
This was a totally enjoyable book that I was able to read at a fast pace and am now ahead of my reading goal for the year!  Whoohooo!
Onto the next book!
Book Review ~ Holiday Homecoming Secrets by Lynette Eason
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Title:  Holiday Homecoming Secrets by Lynette Eason
Series:  Love Inspired Suspense
Pages:  224
Date Published:  December 1, 2019
Publisher:  Love Inspired Books

 Blurb:

A man from her past is back—

to help her solve a holiday murder case.

A friend is missing and presumed dead, and detective Jade Hollis is determined to track down the killer. To do that she must team up with private investigator Bryce Kingsley—who doesn’t know he is the father of her child. But she’ll have to put personal secrets aside because the killer will strike again to keep the truth from being exposed.

My Thoughts:

Years ago, I had a subscription to Love Inspired Books but I haven't read one in years!

I recently felt the urge to read some Christmassy books so when I was at Wal-Mart I checked out the newest releases for a book that grabbed my attention.  I couldn't believe my luck when there was a book written by Lynette Eason, one of my favorite suspense authors.  So, I snatched up "Holiday Homecoming Secrets".

From the "blurb", I knew that there would be many facets to the storyline.  I wasn't wrong!

I had an inkling of who the "killer" might have been early on in the story but couldn't quite figure out the why.  It turned out I was completely wrong about the motive but I was very impressed with myself that I didn't flip to the back of the book to see if I was on the right track with my suspicions.  I let the story unfold as the author intended :)

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this Love Inspired Suspense novel and have a few more on my TBR Shelf that are also Christmas books that I picked up at Goodwill of all places!

I'm excited about fiction again!

Onto the next book!

Book Review ~ Formula of Deception by Carrie Stuart Parks

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Title:  Formula of Deception by Carrie Stuart Parksw
Series:  N/A
Pages:  320
Date Published:  July 3, 2018
Publisher:  Thomas Nelson
 Blurb:
When her twin sister was murdered, Murphy Anderson changed her name and appearance and moved to Kodiak to avoid the press and publicity. But when local authorities discover she’s an artist and request her help in drawing a dying man’s memories, she unintentionally ends up in the limelight again—and may be back in the killer’s crosshairs.
The memory that Murphy was asked to draw was from an Alaskan hunter who discovered five bodies on remote Ruuwaq Island ten years ago, but has only shared the information with the police now that he’s dying of cancer. When they go to the island to investigate, no skeletons remain but there is evidence that the bodies may have been deliberately destroyed. But the big discovery is of a World War II Quonset hut.
As one by one the people who were at the hut die, Murphy knows there is something much deeper at stake. What happened there during WWII? And who is willing to kill to keep those secrets buried?
My Thoughts:
 Oh MY!!!
What a book!
I don't know where to start with this review other than to say that this book is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!  I'd even go so far as to say it was the best books I've read in years!
Carrie Stuart Parks is a new-to-me author so I didn't know what to expect.  Let's just say I got a whole lotta bang for my $1.99 at Ollies.
I just finished this book 10 minutes ago and am still a little bit in shock by the ending!  I thought I had everything all figured and then WHAM!
The characters, especially Murphy/Dakota, were very well written and the scenery played before me as if in photographs or a movie reel.
I'm going to be thinking about this book for days!
I'll definitely be on the lookout for more books by this author.
Just amazing!
Book Review ~ Truth Stained Lies by Terri Blackstock
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Title:  Truth Stained Lies by Terri Blackstock
Series:  The Moonlighters Book 1
Pages:  352
Date Published: February 12, 2013
Publisher:  Zondervan

 Blurb:

    Cathy Cramer is a former lawyer and investigative blogger who writes commentary on local homicides. When she finds a threatening note warning her that she's about to experience the same kind of judgment and speculation that she dishes out in her blog, Cathy writes it off as mischief ... until her brother is caught in the middle of a murder investigation---the victim is his ex-wife.

As her brother is tried and convicted in the media, and bloggers and commentators like her have a field day, Cathy wonders if she should have taken the threat more seriously.

Cathy and her two sisters, Holly and Juliet, moonlight as part-time private investigators, working to solve their brother's ex-wife's murder. Juliet, a stay-at-home mom of two boys, and Holly, a scattered ne'er-do-well who drives a taxi, put aside their fear and lack of confidence to learn the art of investigation.

But will it be too late to save their brother from a murder conviction, or his five-year-old son who's the killer's next target?

My Thoughts:

I really wanted to like this book.

I've read one other book by this author, "If I Run", and really liked it.  I thought I would try one of her older books and was able to get this one from paperbackswap.com.

However, the book was just "OK" for me.

I think my problem was there were too many POV's.  There were at least 5 different POV's happening throughout the book.  I understand that this is the first book in the series and the characters needed to be introduced but it just felt like I was jumping all over the place.

Also, I figured out "whodunnit" about half way through the book and I had trouble holding interest after that.

I really wanted to like this author as she's a very popular author with many fans.  I just don't think it is for me though.

Bummer...

Book Review ~ Fatal Mistake by Susan Sleeman

~~~~~~~~~~~~
 Blurb:
 An FBI agent must protect the woman who can identify a terrorist bomber in bestselling author Susan Sleeman's riveting romantic suspense novel.
 Each day could be her last...but not if he can help it.
Tara Parrish is the only person ever to survive an attack by the Lone Wolf bomber. Scared and emotionally scarred by her near death, she goes into hiding with only one plan--to stay alive for another day. She knows he's coming after her, and if he finds her, he will finish what he started.
Agent Cal Riggins has had only one goal for the past six months--to save lives by ending the Lone Wolf's bombing spree. To succeed, he needs the help of Tara Parrish, the one person who can lead them to the bomber. Cal puts his all into finding Tara, but once he locates her, he realizes if he can find her, the Lone Wolf can, too. He must protect Tara at all costs, and they'll both need to resist the mutual attraction growing between them to focus on hunting down the bomber, because one wrong move could be fatal.
My Thoughts:
 Wow!
I absolutely loved this book!
Susan Sleeman is another new-to-me author that has fast become a favorite.  One book and I'm a major fan!
From the very first line of the book I was gripping the edge of my seat (or bed...wherever I happened to be reading :)  When they called it a "romantic suspense" it was an understatement in my opinion!  The suspense was there full-time with hardly any lulls in action.  I was hanging on for dear life! :)
I loved that Tara was pro-active and didn't sit around waiting for a man to save her.  (Except that one time...)  She had a plan for survival and she was above prepared.  She made an excellent romantic suspense heroine.
Super Agent Man, Cal, was an amazing hero.  He was methodical and strong and very capable.  He was the not-so-perfect hero who worked through his own life struggles.
Even though the book took place in such a short period of time, the story...and the romance...didn't feel rushed at all.  It felt very "organic".  (Isn't that the new word for natural??)
I loved getting introduced to the "White Knights" and am oh-so looking forward to reading more about them and anything else written by this author!
A must read Inspirational Romantic Suspense!
