Good for the Soul Women's Book Club ~ February 2025 Selection

Prairie, the fearless leader of the Good for the Soul Women's Book Club, has announced that we are going to have a read-a-long for our February 2025 Book Club Selection!

The book we'll be reading is "You're Not Enough (and that's okay) by Allie Beth Stuckey.

~~~~~~
BLURB:
From one of the sharpest Christian voices of her generation and host of the podcast Relatable comes a framework for escaping our culture of trendy narcissism—and embracing God instead.
We're told that the key to happiness is self-love. Instagram influencers, mommy bloggers, self-help gurus, and even Christian teachers promise that if we learn to love ourselves, we'll be successful, secure, and complete. But the promise doesn't deliver. Instead of feeling fulfilled, our pursuit of self-love traps us in an exhausting cycle: as we strive for self-acceptance, we become addicted to self-improvement.
The truth is we can't find satisfaction inside ourselves because
we are the problem. We struggle with feelings of inadequacy because we are inadequate. Alone, we are not good enough, smart enough, or beautiful enough. We're not enough--period. And that's okay, because God is.
The answer to our insufficiency and insecurity isn't self-love, but God's love. In Jesus, we're offered a way out of our toxic culture of self-love and into a joyful life of relying on him for wisdom, satisfaction, and purpose. We don't have to wonder what it's all about anymore. This is it.
This book isn't about battling your not-enoughness; it's about embracing it. Allie Beth Stuckey, a Christian, conservative new mom, found herself at the dead end of self-love, and she wants to help you combat the false teachings and self-destructive mindsets that got her there. In this book, she uncovers the myths popularized by our self-obsessed culture, reveals where they manifest in politics and the church, and dismantles them with biblical truth and practical wisdom.
~~~~~~~~~

There were three options for ordering this book:  hardcopy (actually hardcover), Kindle and audio.  This time I decided to order the hardcopy.  I anticipate wanting to really mark this book up with notes as we discuss each week in our Facebook chat.  My copy should arrive January 30th, so just in time to get started :)

Prairie even made us a schedule for the read-a-long!

I hope you'll come check out the Book Club and maybe even decide to join in!

Happy Homemaker Monday ~ 9/30/2024

Come join Diary of a SAHM for Happy Homemaker Monday.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hello and HAPPY Monday.
Can you believe it is the last day of September?  This month has flown by.  I was looking at my calendar for October and it is busy as well.  It will be Thanksgiving and Christmas before we know it!  I'm just focusing on enjoying Fall and trying not to think of Winter being just around the corner.
Here's to the week ahead!
The weather outside is:
We've had lots of rain lately.  More than we had all Summer!  I shouldn't have a problem being able to compete the Rainy Day prompt for one of Readathon I'm participating in.
On today's to-do list:
Take Laken to and from school; fold laundry; sweep and mop (I mopped Friday, but with all the rain/mud it needs done again); cook.  Ordinary homemaking a tasks.
Happening this week:
I have to have to make a trip to Altoona Tuesday.  It just so happens that our closed Hobby Lobby is in Altoona.   Hmmmm.....  Should I stop in to see what I can see?  I think, yes!
Thursday and Friday our Church ladies will be making 60 pies for my alma maters Homecoming celebration.  It will take us both days.  I really wish we had an industrial oven but, alas, we only have a regular oven that will bake 6 pies at once.  Even though it is a lot of work, it is also a fun time together with the other ladies.
Saturday is Homecoming and we'll be running our pie booth.    Busy days ahead!
Currently reading:
I'm getting ready to start reading "The House at the End of the Moor" by Michelle Griep for the readathons I'm participating in.  This cover is what drew me in as well as loving this author!
To see more about my reading week, please go HERE to check out My Weekly Bookishness post!
Are we friends on Goodreads?  You can find my Goodreads profile HERE.
Listening to:
I love me some TobyMac!  Enjoy :)
Watching:
I'm watching the Steelers VS Colts game as I'm writing this post.  It isn't looking good so far and it is less than 5 minutes into the game!  ***Edited to add:  the Steelers lost :(***
"The Real West" a Hallmark fall movie that takes place at a "dude ranch".  It was so good and not a typical run-of-the-mill Hallmark movie.  Have you watched it?
Did anyone watch the pilot episode of "Matlock" on CBS/Paramount?  It was so good!  I think I'm going to like this series.  I'm also looking forward to watching "The Summit" which starts tonight.
Booktubers that I've discovered recently and also some favorite homemaking/sewing youtubers.
In the Kitchen:
I didn't spend much time in the Kitchen this week other than making some pretty easy dinners.  I also took the easy way out making dessert!  I got this Perfectly Pumpkin cookie mix and cream cheese icing at the store.
I made the cookie mix into cookie bars (the easy way out :)  They were good but very, very sweet with all that icing!
In the Craft Basket:
I have 28/35 blocks finished for the Japanese Fields Afghan.  Last week I was at 23/35 blocks completed so I've made some progress.  I haven't taken any new pictures of my stack of squares lately but I'm glad to say my ends are all woven in!  I'd like to finish making the granny squares this week.   Seven squares should be doable if I work at it while watching TV and youtube.
Picture(s) from the Camera
It was National Daughter's Day this past week (at least that is what I saw on FB).  Here are my two beauties!  This picture was taken last Summer at Black Water Falls, WV.  I really need to get an updated picture of the two of them.  They are both so busy all the time that it is hard to get them together any more.
My devotion time a few days ago was on 1 Timothy 1:1 and the fact that Christ Jesus is our hope.  I needed that reminder :)
Another week, another candle.  Cinnamon Sugared Pretzel.  It smells so good!
I picked up my 2025 wall calendar already!  I decided on this Bible Verse calendar.  There were a few different Bible calendars but the pictures on this one really drew me in.  Do you still use a wall calendar?
Book mail!  I received a few books this week.  If you want to see more, go check out my Instagram posts.  "The Debutante's Code" by Erica Vetsch is the October book for the Good for the Soul Women's Book Club on FB.  I joined in the September book's Zoom chat even though I hadn't read the book and I was so welcomed!  The Book Club just started a few months ago so it is still getting off the ground.  You should come check it out!
HOCO 2024:  Nate and Laken.
Daddy and Laken.  Because I love this picture!
Prayer Requests
~Continued prayers for Laken as she has a full workload this school year.
~***Special prayers for a dear friend from Church who is currently in the ICU.  She is an older lady and has internal bleeding.  They are trying to determine what is causing it so they can decide on the best treatment.***  My friend is home from the hospital and recuperating at home to get her strength back.  Thank the LORD no surgery is needed and she is planning on baking pies at the end of this week with us!
~As always, prayers for the safety and well-being of all school/college kids.  (continued)
~Our Country, our Leaders and the Election coming in November.  (continued)
Bible Verse
"20 For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.”"  John 3: 20-21 (NASB)
Have a great week!
Happy Homemaker Monday ~ 8/26/2024
Come join Diary of a SAHM for Happy Homemaker Monday.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Hello and HAPPY Monday.

The first week of Laken's Senior Year is in the books!  I feel kind of old.

I was looking at all the obligatory first day of school pictures that everyone was posting on Facebook.  There were a lot of Seniors and even College students but I also saw lots of little ones getting on the school bus or outside their school for the first time.

I guess I've just always seen myself as a young mom.  I have to come to the realization that I'm old enough (more than old enough) to be a ,,,  GRANDMOTHER!  Settle down!  No one is pregnant.  (to my knowledge ).  I have to move on or I'm going to get super depressed about my babies being grown!

Let's get on with today's Happy Homemaker :)

The weather outside is:

Summer is back.  That is all.

On today's to-do list:

I'm off work at my job today so I get to be a Happy Homemaker all day!  I got most of my to-do list done on Friday, my last day off as I had to work both Saturday and Sunday.  My list for today will be to wash my work shirts, fold laundry, take Laken to and from school, practice driving with Laken in the afternoon, alter a few dresses I got at the thrift shop and anything else that comes my way.  I might even take a nap.  Wouldn't that be glorious!?!

Happening this week:

I work Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week.  I work the early shift which is good for taking Laken to school in the mornings.

I have hopes of it being a fairly quiet week with just the normal activities.  We don't have any appointments this week which is a good thing.

Currently reading:

Only my devotional and Bible.

I just watched a movie about a Book Club (more about that later) and it really has me missing the Kindred Readers Book Club that I used to co-host on Facebook.  Does anyone belong to a good Book Club that you could point me to?  I need a REALLY good book to get me hooked and back in to reading.

Listening to:

Enjoy!

Watching:

My babies grow up!  Here is the First Day of Kindergarten Picture next to the First Day of Senior Year picture.

As I mentioned above, we watched "Blind Date Book Club" and it was so cute!  It was about a bookstore owner who hosted a "mystery" book club by wrapping the books with paper and just putting a blurb on the front to intrigue people into reading the book.  If they liked the book (or not) they could come share their thoughts on the book.  Erin Krakow was the leading lady and I really enjoy her movies.  Let me know if you saw it or if you're going to go watch it now that you've heard about the movie :)

I've also been watching some new YouTube channels featuring "sewists" which have me itching to get my sewing machine out!

In the Kitchen:

Friday I had supper in the oven and decided while the oven was hot to try a second variation of the cinnamon roll "cobbler".  A few week ago I made one with apple pie filling and it was SO very good!

This time I had picked chocolate chips and pecans!

I cut the cinnamon rolls in fours, melted a stick of butter, added brown sugar and cinnamon plus about half a bag of chocolate chips and stirred it all together.

I only put the pecans on half the cobbler because not everyone in the house likes them (Laken).  It turned out so delicious!  I might have over-done it with the stick of butter because there was a lot of oeey gooey goodness.  I was going to wipe it off the plate to make the picture look more professional but decided to leave it as is to show the yumminess!

I haven't decided what to make this week.  Any suggestions?

In the Craft Basket:

I'm e...v...e...r so slowly working on Japanese Fields blocks.

I also want to alter a few dresses I got at the thrift store as I mentioned above.  The first dress is just too big and shapeless.  I think I'll take the sides in and maybe add a belt.  The second dress has straps and peekaboo shoulders that hand WAY too low on my shoulders.  I'm thinking of just cutting off the peekaboo shoulders and wearing a shrug over top of it as I wouldn't feel comfortable without one.

Picture from the Camera

Prayer Request

Please keep my work situation in your prayers.  I absolutely do not like having to work on Sunday morning but it seems like they keep scheduling me to work then.

Laken is now taking 4 college courses.  Please pray that she does well with them and that she stays healthy.

As always, prayers for the safety and well-being of all those going back to school.

Bible Verse

"First of all then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity."  I Timothy 2: 1-2  NASB

Have a great week!

The Good Stuff ~ 12/9/2021

~~~~~~~~
~Kindred Readers Book Club!  I'm so excited to be co-hosting a brand new book club.  Our first book (for January 2022) is "Year of Yes" by Shonda Rhimes.  Click HERE to come check out the facebook group and, hopefully, join in :)
~A Baby Shower!  Saturday was the Baby Shower for, Rachel, my cousin's sweet wife.  Some family from Virginia even surprised us by making the 3 hour drive for the shower.  It was a great time of family and celebration of the new baby girl coming into the family.  Mom and Dad are keeping her name a secret until her arrival!  So fun :)
~A Baby Reveal!  Another cousin of mine, Nikki who lives in Florida, is having a baby also.  Saturday (it was a busy day) she had a gender reveal and they skyped us Pennsylvanians so we could be part.  Nikki's older sister, Heather, was the "gender keeper".  Oh, and the baby is a GIRL!! :)
~Virtual Christmas Cookie Exchange!  I took part in the yearly Virtual Christmas Cookie Exchange Blog Hop on Wednesday.  Click HERE to go see what I shared :)
What has you thankful/smiling/exited this week?  Tell me all the good stuff!
A Book Club For 2022????
I've been horrible about finishing books lately.
I start reading with gusto and then never come back to the book.  I have no motivation to finish and review the book.  I can't tell you how many times I've done this.
I was thinking a Book Club might be just the thing I need to find my reading mojo again.  I need to mix it up a bit I think.
This is where I need your help!
Do you belong to a Book Club I could join?
Do you know of any online Book Clubs that are good?
Would anyone be interested in partnering with me to start a Blogging Book Club?
  I would be willing to co-host, but I need to have a partner-in-crime (or two) to help me.  If you're interested you can email me at collettaskitchensink (at) yahoo (dot) com .
Any thoughts?  I'm open to all suggestions!
Book Club ~ #1 ~ SEPTEMBER 2021
I'd like to start hosting a monthly Book Club here on Colletta's Kitchen Sink.
The idea is that we each read books from our shelf, write reviews and then share them here with the Book Club.
So, no need to buy new books that may or may not interest you.  Read what you already have (or go buy a new book), write a review and share as many reviews as you want here whenever you get a chance!  All month long!  You might even be featured next month :)
Now for SEPTEMBER 2021's Book Club:
 The "rules":
~Must be family friendly.
~Mingle and check out each other's reviews.
That is it!
For now, until I see how much interest there is in having a Book Club, please leave a comment including a direct link to your review.  If we have enough interest, I'll look into a "linky" option.
I hope you'll join me and let your friends know about the Book Club!
