Book Review ~ Back in the Saddle by Ruth Logan Herne ~ 3/31/16

Blurb:

It’s been a long time since Colt Stafford shrugged off his cowboy legacy for shiny Manhattan loafers and a promising career on Wall Street. But when stock market manipulations leave him financially strapped, the oldest son of legendary rancher Sam Stafford decides to return to the sprawling Double S ranch in Gray’s Glen, Washington. He’s broke, but not broken, and it’s time to check in with his ailing father, and get his legs back under him by climbing into the saddle again.

He doesn’t expect to come home to a stranger pointing a loaded gun at his chest— a tough yet beautiful woman that Sam hired as the house manager. Colt senses there’s more to Angelina Morales than meets the eye and he’s determined to find out what she’s hiding...and why.

Colt’s return brings new challenges. Younger brother Nick has been Sam’s right-hand man at the ranch for years and isn’t thrilled at having Colt insert himself into Double S affairs. And the ranch’s contentious relationship with the citizens of Gray’s Glen asks all the Stafford men to examine their hearts about what it truly means to be a neighbor.  And as Wall Street recovers, will Colt succumb to the call of the financial district’s wealth and power—or finally the courage to stay in the saddle for good?

My Thoughts:

This is the first book in the "Double S Ranch" Series and the first book I've read by this author.

I love a good cowboy story and I wasn't disappointed.

Angelina was a great heroine even though she seemed a bit abrupt and distant at first.

Colt was the perfect hero.  Strong, handsome and take-charge.

I wasn't sure were the story-line was headed exactly and I liked that.

I can't wait to read more about Colt's brother, Nick, in the next book of the series!

Book Review ~ Trouble in Store by Carol Cox ~ 3/30/16

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
16109790
Blurb:
Fired from her most recent governess position, Melanie Ross must embrace her last resort: the Arizona mercantile she inherited from her cousin. But Caleb Nelson is positive he inherited the mercantile, and he's not about to let some obstinate woman with newfangled ideas mess up all he's worked for. He's determined to get Melanie married off as soon as possible, and luckily there are plenty of single men in town quite interested in taking her off his hands.
The problem is, Caleb soon realizes he doesn't want her to marry up with any of them. He's drawn to Melanie more every day, and he has to admit some of her ideas for the store unexpectedly offer positive results.
But someone doesn't want the store to succeed, and what used to be just threatening words has escalated into deliberate destruction and lurkers in the night. When a body shows up on the mercantile steps--and the man obviously didn't die from natural causes--things really get dangerous. Can Melanie and Caleb's business--and romance--survive the trouble that's about to come their way?
My Thoughts:
This book started out as a fun, light-hearted read.  Then it turned into a murder mystery!
And for the life of me, I could not figure out whodunit!
Melanie was a brave heroine who traveled by herself form Ohio to Arizona.  She had great ideas for the store but had only one obstacle:  Caleb.
Caleb wasn't thrilled to have Melanie show up at the store claiming her half.  He was used to going it alone and taking care of his son, Levi, while doing so.  He definitely wasn't ready for the changes Melanie wanted to make.  He even tries to get her married off.
Levi was a six year old boy.  That should say enough right there!  The troubles he got into were sometimes hysterical!  He definitely added character to the story.
This book was a thoroughly enjoyable read and I look forward to reading more by this author.
Book Review ~ Fatal Exchange by Lisa Harris ~ 3/23/16
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Blurb:

Emily Hunt might come from a family of cops, but she never goes looking for an adrenaline rush. She lives the quiet–well, relatively quiet–life of a teacher and thrives on making a difference in the lives of her students. But she’ll have to draw on a well of strength and savvy she didn’t know she had as student Rafael Cerda takes her class hostage for ransom money to save his brother’s life.

Undercover cop Mason Taylor has been working with Rafael to find his brother and bring the cartel thugs who hold him to justice. Can he talk Rafael down from his impulsive actions? And is there something more sinister at work here than he realizes?

Fatal Exchange draws readers into a complex matrix of intertwining lives and unraveling secrets, where every answer creates more questions. Romantic suspense fans will hardly want to come up for air

My Thoughts:

This is the second book in the Southern Crimes series.  You can read my review of "Dangerous Passage", book one HERE.

After reading the first book and LOVING it, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book and read it.

I was NOT disappointed!  There were times were I literally found myself holding my breath!

Almost the entire book takes place over the course of one extreme day.  There is so much action and drama packed into that one day that it is amazing.

The character were great.  I really liked both Emily and Mason, the main characters.  Romance was hinted at during the ending of the book.

If you like crime dramas, this is a book you must read!  I'm so excited that book three of the series is already on my bookshelf!  I can't wait to read Michael's story :)

Book Review ~ Counting on a Cowboy by Debra Clopton ~ 3/23/16

Blurb:

After losing everything she held dear, Abby never wants to love again. But a certain cowboy may just spur her to wonder if love might be worth the risk.

Running from a past that haunts her, Abby Knightly is drawn to the cozy town of Wishing Springs, Texas. Maybe this small town could offer hope and healing and a future for Abby . . . if she s brave enough to reach out and take it by the reins.

Bo Monahan isn t interested in the new romantic destination his little town has become or the women who might be looking at him like he s their next Mr. Right. Between taking care of his Pops and his growing stirrup business, he isn t looking for serious romantic commitments. But when the infant son he never knew about shows up at his doorstep, his world is turned upside down.

This confirmed bachelor might not think he needs a wife, but he sure needs help. Even Abby can see that, and despite her best efforts to keep her distance, she can t help but be drawn to this new father-son duo. As Abby throws herself into helping Bo navigate fatherhood, hope sparks between them, revealing that maybe, just maybe, they can navigate their dark pasts and emerge together into a future as bright as the Texas sun itself.

My Thoughts:

I read the third book of the Four of Hearts Ranch Series, "Kissed by a Cowboy", first.  Then I was lucky enough to get hands on the first and second books of the series.  I read and reviewed "Betting on Hope" last week.  I finally finished out the series with "Counting on a Cowboy", Bo's story.

I was really excited to read this book.  I was really curious how all the characters were going to come into play.

I loved Abby.  She was struggling to get her life back together and was hurting so badly.  Bo's son, Levi, did so much to help her heal.

Bo was, of course, "almost" perfect!  He could be a little pushy but he was a good guy.  He made for a great hero to the story.

I fell in love with the town of Wishing Springs and wish I could go there to visit.  Maybe for the annual picnic!

I'm sad to see this series end but I enjoyed it immensely!  I look forward to reading more by Debra Clopton in the future.

Book Review ~ The Hearts We Mend by Kathryn Springer ~ 3/17/16

Blurb:

For young widow Evie Bennett, moving forward will mean deciding what to leave behind . . . and what to keep.

Widowed at the age of twenty-five when her firefighter husband was killed in the line of duty, Evie Bennett has spent the last thirteen years raising their son, Cody, in the close-knit community of Banister Falls. As the women’s ministry director of her church, Evie encourages women to boldly pursue God’s plan for their future . . . while she is content with her memories of the past. But Evie’s well-ordered life begins to change when she meets Jack Vale.

As Evie gets drawn into Jack’s world—a world that isn’t as safe and predictable as the one she’s worked so hard to create—he challenges her to open her eyes to the problems in the community . . . but will Evie open her heart to love again?

My Thoughts:

This book had such a sweet story!  Sigh.....

This is the second book of the "Banister Falls" series by Kathryn Springer.  I will admit it took me a chapter or two to figure who everyone was but that didn't hinder me from completely enjoying this book.

Evie was a great leading lady.  I love that she is my age and is in a different season of her life than the typical 18 year old heroine.

Jack is a total mystery at first.  I really enjoyed getting to know him piece by piece.  There were so many aspects to his character that had to be "seen" as the story went along.

The secondary characters were equally as enjoyable as the two main characters.  I would love to read more about them.

I can already say that I'll definitely be reading more of this series :)

Blurb:

One clutzy advice columnist.

One champion cowboy.

And an entire small town rooting for love.

Advice columnist Maggie Hope never dreamed she d be shaking hands with champion horse trainer Tru Monahan over a high-stakes bet, especially one that involves horses. And saddles. And everything else a city girl like Maggie feels uncomfortable around. But after filling in for a coworker and interviewing the handsome cowboy, she finds herself doing just that. Anything to save her advice column.

Despite Maggie s two left feet, Tru is bound and determined to bring out her inner cowgirl by teaching her to ride a cutting horse, trained to separate cattle from the rest of the herd. While her riding improves, their attraction intensifi es, but Tru knows he can never let her into his heart for her own good.

In Wishing Springs, a community full of meddling but well-meaning townsfolk, Maggie discovers the home she s always longed for. But she s holding something back a secret that could destroy her reputation and any future she s ever hoped for with the cowboy she mightust love."

My Thoughts:

I read the third book of the Four of Hearts Ranch Series, "Kissed by a Cowboy", first.  I knew right away that I must read about Jarrod's brothers, Tru and Bo, also.  Luckily, a friend on  paperbackswap.com had the first two books of the series and sent them to me!

I was so excited!

I tried to read another book before picking up this one but just couldn't get into it because I really wanted to be reading "Betting on Hope".  Finally, I gave in and picked it up :)

It did NOT disappoint!

I loved getting to know Maggie and Tru's characters.  Their histories, their personalities and their romance.  Especially their romance :)

It was fun reading about Tru and Maggie's "bet" and Tru teaching Maggie to ride.  Sigh....

I can't wait to read "Counting on a Cowboy", Bo's story.

On a small Kansas farm, Christina Willems lovingly shepherds a group of poor and displaced individuals who count on her leadership and have come to see the Brambleville Asylum for the Poor as their home. But when a fire breaks out in the kitchen leaving the house inhabitable, she must scramble to find shelter for all in her care, scattering her dear “family.”

With no other options, Christina is forced to approach Levi Jonnson, a reclusive mill owner, to take in a young blind boy named Tommy Kilgore. Levi agrees with reluctance but finds himself surprised by the bond that quickly grows between him and Tommy. As obstacles to repairing the farm pile up against Christina, she begins to question her leadership ability and wonders if she can fulfill the mission to which she's dedicated her life.
