Book Description:

Sandwich represents hope for twenty-year-old Maddie Buckner and Kyle, the eleven-year-old brother Maddie wants to spring out of foster care. Then she loses her new job after less than a day on the clock. It’s all Reuben-the-Jerk’s fault, and she’s determined to make him right the wrong.

He does so, reluctantly, by giving her a job at his restaurant, The Sandwich Emporium. Then crazy things start happening at the restaurant, and Kyle’s foster parents apply to adopt him. To stop it all, Maddie must learn the art of humbling herself and accepting the help God has arranged, risking her heart to Reuben in the process.

And she’d rather eat a million corned-beef on rye sandwiches than do that.

My Overall Feeling of the Book:

I have been following Krista's blog for quite a while now so I was anxiously awaiting the chance to read her very first published book.  When I got opportunity to review it as part of the above book tour, I jumped at it!

This was one of those books that I picked up right before bed to read a few chapters to relax.  That was at 9:30pm.  I finished the book at 2:00am.

First I was going to read a few chapters.  Then I was going to read to the mid-way point.  Then I just couldn't not finish it.  And it was on a school night.  Needless to say, as soon as I got the girls off to school the next morning, I had to take a morning nap.

This book was excellent!  And that truly is my honest opinion.

My Favorite Character:

My favorite character was Maddie.  She is so funny, snarky and independent.  She is determined to make a better life for herself and get her little brother out of foster care.  I love that she is a fairly new Christian and talks to God openly and honestly.

I have to mention that Reuben is swoon-worthy and even though he can be a jerk (really all men can be), he has a heart of gold.

My Favorite Scene:

There were so many favorite scenes in this book!  It is really hard to narrow it down.  I'll go with the scene when Maddie and Reuben meet in the hair salon and the events that lead to their being thrown together.

My Favorite Sentence/Paragraph:
Maddie combed the first swatch of hair and positioned her scissors to make the cut, but Reuben's head jerked farther down then up as she began her cut, causing her hands to slip.

Maddie gasped.  Dread curled itself around her stomach and squeezed.  In her trembling hand she'd caught four full inches of his hair.  On the side of Reuben's forehead was a one-and-a-half-inch dusty-blong stub.

It Would Have Been Better If:

There honestly was not a single thing I would change about this book.  Not a thing!  That doesn't happen very often.  I can't wait for Krista to write another book :)

I Would Recommend This Book To:

Hair stylists, waitresses, administrative assistants, anyone who has ever had to sleep in their car, big sisters, young adults, basically everyone!

  3. My worst haircut was when I was 8...my moms friend was talking to her husband on the phone not paying any attention. Next thing I knew I basically had a pixie because I was so uneven. It was sad!! I come from a family with long locks! Needless to say no more from her!!

  4. A bad haircut? Oh, yes, it was almost as short as a boy's haircut but stylish! I couldn't wait for my hair to grow out.

  6. Hmmm... I don't think I have ever had a BAD haircut. I have had a few that weren't "exactly" like I wanted them (either the hairdresser cut too much off or didn't give me enough layers or something like that). Oh... wait.... thinking back to Kindergarten, I DID have a bad haircut. I had longer hair and accidentally got GUM in my hair. My grandmother cut my hair to get the gum out and she cut it longer on one side and shorter on the other. I don't know why... And she was always cutting my bangs crooked. >(

  8. Oh Gosh, I have had several bad haircuts. I don't know which part of "just a little bit" my stylist doesn't get. I swear! She always does whatever she wants on my hair which is pretty much equal to me looking like a boy. I still love her though. Hair grows.
