St. Patrick's Day Aprons

I sold all the aprons out of my store, so as I get timeto make them, I'll be adding more.  You can click my store button on my sidebar  or HERE to see my listings.

I made these two St. Patrick's aprons over the weekend and they are now listed in my store.

The first apron is just adorable.  It has shamrocks, lady bugs, yellow flowers and is a bit glittery.   Click HERE to go directly to the listing.

The accent fabric is shamrocks on white.  Here's a close-up.

The second is an Argyle background with shamrocks.  Click HERE to go directly to the listing.

The accent fabric is a varied shade of green that really sets off the main fabric pattern.

I can't wait to get into my fabric stash I've been collecting for aprons.  Look for more in the near future.  I have some really pretty spring aprons planned.

Thanks for checking them out.  Make sure you stop by my store to see what else I have listed.

"Seeds of Summer" by Deborah Vogts

Seasons of the Tallgrass Book 2

Seeds of Summer (Seasons of the Tallgrass)

Book Description:

A heart-warming contemporary romance set in the Flint Hills of Kansas where a former rodeo queen abandons her dreams in order to care for her deceased father’s ranch and her two half-siblings, only to realize with the help of a young new pastor that God can turn even the most dire circumstances into seeds of hope.

Spanning the Seasons of the Tallgrass, each story in this series reveals the struggle of the people who live there and the dreams they have for the land until they come full-circle in a never-ending cycle, just as man comes full-circle in his understanding of God.

My Thoughts:

I liked this book even more than the first in the series.

I fell in love with the Adams family just as Jared does.  I also fell in love with the ranch.  This book reminds me a lot of a TV series I used to watch and loved called "McLeod's Daughters".

Natalie is really stand-offish at the beginning and thinks she can handle or at least try to handle everything that comes by all on her own.

As the story progresses she learns that she can learn to trust and depend on others to help her.

Jared is a preacher who falls in love with a non-Christian.  This was a very hard thing for him to deal with.  As he witnesses to Natalie and her family, Natalie slowly returns to the love she has as a little girl for God.

The whole "Rodeo Queen" aspect was interesting to learn about.

I'm greatly looking forward to the next book in the series, "Blades of Autumn".

Marshmallow Pecan Bars

Before I post this recipe on my blog I need to tell you about another blog that is so spectacular.  I have gotten so many recipes from it lately.  It is:

Monster Mama by Mickey

I know I've referenced her for other recipes but I wanted to give a very special thank you today because this recipe was scrumptious.  So scrumptious in fact that I took it to a Bible Study and I didn't dare bring any home with me because I would have eaten them all.  I realized when I got home that I forgot to take a picture beforehand, so I had to borrow these pictures from Mickey's recipe post.  Make sure you go over and check out MONSTER MAMA!  Don't you just love that name.

Marshmallow Pecan Bars

1 cup chopped pecans
3/4 cup flour
3/4 cup quick cooking oatmeal
2/3 cup brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 egg lightly beaten
1/3 cup cold butter

Topping:

1 jar (7oz.) marshmallow creme
2/3 cup caramel ice cream topping
1 3/4 cups chopped nuts

Preheat oven to 350.

In a small bowl combine chopped nuts, flour, oats, sugar and bakind soda.  Stir in egg, then cut in your cold butter until it is crumbly.  Using your fingers, press into a 13X9 pan.

Bake for 8-10 minutes until it is lightly browned.

Spoon marshmallow creme over hot crust, let it melt a little then gently spread over crust.  (I actually put it back in the oven for a minute to melt the marshmallow enough to spread it.)

Drizzle with the caramel topping and sprinkle with the chopped nuts.

Bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until the marshmallow creme top is just starting to brown.

Cool and cut into bars.

These were total chewy, gooey goodness.  Make sure you have some ice-cold milk at hand!

Weeky Bible Study Update ~ 2/27/11

2/20/11-2/26/11

1st Place for Health.
"God's Best for Your Life".
Week 7 ~ "God's Best for Your Attitude".

God's Best for Your Life -
        By: First Place 4 Health
Memory Verse:  "Submit yourselves, then, to God.  Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." James 4:7

Day 1:  Lord of All
Day 2:  What's In An Attitude
Day 3:  There's Going to Be a Test
Day 4:  Attitude is a Choice
Day 5:  The Devil Has a 'Tude
Day 6:  Reflection and Application
Day 7:  Reflection and Application

Do I have a positive attitude or a negative attiutude?  I'd like to say positive but if I'm truthful, sometimes that negative sneaks right in.

This lesson has helped me see that my attitude reflects how I feel inwardly, not only about others, but about myself as well.

In this world, I can't control the things that will happen.  I can control my attitude with much prayer and help from God.  MUCH PRAYER!

"Walking With Women Through the Word" with Wendy Pope
One Year Chronological Bible in the New Living Translation.
February 20- February 26, 2011

NLT One Year Chronological Bible, Large Print Softcover -

This week's reading was still in Leviticus.  Meaning lots of commands and then the people of Israel following them or sometimes not.  That meant lots of repetition in some parts.

I loved reading about the Festivals and what they were to do.  It seems like we have turned our "festivals", holidays, into just another work day.  See how much extra stuff we can get done, kinda day.

I especially liked the part about taking a complete day for rest.  (See, my Sunday afternoon naps are a requirement.)  I think this is essential for our well being.  Physical, mental and emotional.  As I call it, we need time-outs.

I'm looking forward to getting into this week's reading and discovering things I hadn't "caught" in prior readings.

Chapters 16-19

Made to Crave: Satisfying Your Deepest Desire with God, Not Food -
        By: Lysa TerKeurst

Chapter 16:  Why Diets Don't Work
Chapter 17:  The Very Next Choice We Make
Chapter 18:  Things Lost, Better Things Gained
Chapter 19:  Live as an Overcomer

I have loved this study!  Truly, loved it.  I've been on the "Made to Crave" journey for about 5.5 weeks.  (I got my book a little late) but it has changed how I see so many things about my life and my issues with my weight and food.  Not only that but also issues with my spiritual life that have kept me from overcoming those obstacles.

I tend to have an obsessive nature, so I tried not to go overboard and burn out on my food and exercise plan.  I had to come up with plans that would work for me and that I could sustain.

That being said, I lost 7 lbs during this study and hope to continue forward onto victory.  Not only in weight loss but in spiritual growth.

I don't have to get overwhelmed because my very next choice is all that matters.  Will it be a good choice or a bad choice.  That is up to me.

I know I'll be keeping this book handy and rereading parts of it every week.  I don't want to forget all I've learned.

Melissa Taylors next online study starts on March 20, 2011 and we will be studying "It's No Secret" by Rachel Olsen.  I already have my book and am looking forward to starting the study.  You can sign up for the study over at http://www.melissataylor.org/ .

I GOT DA POWAHH!!   (a little shout out to Melissa!  Thanks so much for leading us in this study!)

TSMSS ~ "I Am New" by Jason Gray

I love the message in this song.  The video has a great message also.  Taking things that are "old" and making them into something "new" and beautiful.

Movie Review: "Just Go With It" PG-13

Just Go With It (2011) Poster

Movie Description:

A plastic surgeon, romancing a much younger schoolteacher, enlists his loyal assistant to pretend to be his soon to be ex-wife, in order to cover up a careless lie. When more lies backfire, the assistant's kids become involved, and everyone heads off for a weekend in Hawaii that will change all their lives.

Cast:

Adam Sandler: Danny
Jennifer Aniston: Katherine
Nick Swardson: Eddie
Brooklyn Decker: Palmer
Bailee Madison: Maggie
Griffin Gluck: Michael

Rated:  PG-13 for frequent crude and sexual content, partial nudity, brief drug references and language.

My Thoughts:

First, this is not a movie for the kids.  Too, many fast-forward spots.   But nothing extremely bad for adult movie-goers.

When deciding what we wanted to go see on our date night, the hubby and I agreed that we wanted something funny.  We needed some laughter.

We laughed so hard that I started coughing!  There were so many hilarious situations and conversations.

I did put my hand over the hubby's eyes during a bikini scene, though.  He doesn't need to be seeing that.

Hubby loves Adam Sandler and I have to admit that this was one of my favorites of his so far.  More storyline and less stupidity.

At one point during the movie I said to my husband, "Let's go to Hawaii."  His reply, "Yeah, right!  Like that's going to happen."   lol  We'll be lucky to hit the beach at our local State Park.

This was a fun, light-hearted movie with just a little too much language and skin to be a family movie.

Have you seen it?  What did you think?

"The Bride Backfire" by Kelly Eileen Hake

Prairie Promises Book 2

The Bride Backfire (Prairie Promises, Bk 2)

Book Description:

Come on down for a real family feud in this witty romance, the second novel in Kelly Eileen Hake's Prairie Promises series.

In the Nebraskan Territory of 1857, the longstanding feud between their two families makes Opal Speck desperate to save the life of the Grogan who once pulled her from a burning building.

Will her big white lie -- that Adam is the father of her unborn child -- land in enemy territory for the rest of her life? Find out how Adam and Opal deal with the repercussions of their shotgun wedding in The Bride Backfire!

My Thoughts:

This book was a quick read.  It flowed and the storyline kept moving making it hard to put down.

Opal gives up her freedom to save Adam's life.  Adam didn't have a clue most of the time.  He was so focused on Opal telling him who the "father" was to consider Opal's true character.  They do come together nicely by the end of the book.

I just have to say:  What a Monster-in-Law!  Have you ever seen that movie?  Adam's mother is just plain evil!  Or maybe a crazy.  That could be it.

The fueding interaction between the Grogan's and the Speck's makes for some very interesting reading.

Book 3 of the series is "The Bride Blunder" and I look forward to reading it.

Double Fudge Oreo Crunch Cookies

I found this recipe over at http://www.howsweeteats.com/ .  As soon as I saw "fudge" and "Oreo" I knew I was a must try recipe.

I was soooo right!  These cookies were amazing!

You have to try these.

Double Fudge Oreo Crunch Cookies

1 cup butter, room temperature
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups flour
1/2 cup cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup chocolate chips
1 cup crushed Oreo cookies

Cream butter, sugar, eggs and vanilla until fluffy.  Add flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt.  Mix until combined.

fold in chocolate chips and crushed Oreos.  Refrigerate doug for 2-4 hours.  When ready to bake, preheat oven to 350, roll into balls or use a scoop to place the dough on the baking sheet.

Bake for 10-12 minutes.  Let cool completely.

*My admissions:  I didn't refrigerate.  Couldn't wait that long!  Also, I baked them for about 14 minutes.  They seemed a bit underdone at 12 minutes.  I don't know if it had anything to do with not refrigerating, but I wouldn't think so.  Keep your eye on the first batch until they are done to your liking and time it.*

You really need to try these cookies.  They are scrumptious.  I shared these with my Wednesday night Prayer and Bible Study Group.  Otherwise, I would have eaten them all.  Definitely not on my "plan".

Copenhagen Pillow Top

I made this pillow top from a free pattern at Stitch Nation by Debbie Stoller called Copenhagen Pillow.

It is made from 16 varied Granny Squares and a border.  I used yarn that I had on hand so the colors are a bit different than the actual pattern.  I might make another one in different colors to go with my family room decor.

It had been a long time since I'd crocheted Granny Squares, so it was fun to do something a little different.

Now just need to make the pillow for it.  I have everything I need to make it.  I just have to take the time.

"Hannah Grace" by Sharlene MacLaren

Daughters of Jacob Kane Book 1

Hannah Grace (Daughters of Jacob Kane, Bk 1)

Book Description:

Growing up in the west Michigan resort town of Sandy Shores in the early 1900s, Hannah Grace, the eldest of Jacob Kane's three daughters, is feisty and strong-willed, yet practical. Between working at her father's general store and courting the town's physician, Ralston Van Huff, Hannah has her life planned out in an orderly, meaningful way. Or so she thinks.

Hannah's world turns upside down when the new sheriff comes to town. Gabriel Devlin is strong, outspoken, and a Christian, to boot-but he's sworn off women, having met ones mostly interested in money and apathetic about God.

Determined to ignore the newcomer's handsome looks, Hannah is drawn to him nonetheless by a shy, runaway orphan boy named Jesse. While Hannah works to befriend the shy vagabond, who's living with Gabriel until other arrangements can be made, God works in her heart. What plans does he have in store for this young woman who thought she had it all together?

My Thoughts:

I had Book 2 of this series on my TBR shelf for a while.  Then I got Book 3.  Then I had to wait a while until it was my turn to get "Hannah Grace", Book 1 from PBS.  So, I was patiently anticipating reading this series.

Book 1 was definitely worth the wait.  I love the Kane family!  I'm so glad I get to read two more books in this series.
Hannah is a great leading lady.  And Gabe.  Oh my.  What a man!  He's a great combination of strength and gentleness.

Poor little Jesse stole my heart from the beginning even though he wasn't very cooperative for a while.

This book is full of great detail, romance, suspense and danger.  Everything that makes a great book.

I was so glad when Hannah dumped "old Huffy".  Then so excited when Gabe made his move.  lol

Book 2 is "Maggie Rose" and I'm really looking forward to reading it also.  I'm so glad it is already on my TBR shelf!

Queen of the Castle ~ Week 8

Week 8 ~ Pray First, Act Later

You can find the previous weeks HERE.

Do you have a "lonely place" to be alone with the Father as Jesus did in Mark 1:35?

My "lonely place" is usually on my bed with my lap desk.  I go in and shut the door or tell everyone that I'm going to do my "devotions" now and they know that mean I need some peace and quiet so that I can pray and study God's word.  If Doug is on night shift that means he's in bed during the day so my  "lonely place" becomes the corner of the table near the sliding glass door.  Once again, everyone knows to leave Mom alone for a bit.  (that doesn't always happen when you have kids, though!)

We need quiet time with God to replenish us and fill up our tanks for the hours, days, weeks ahead.  When we are the busiest is when we need that time even more.

For me last week, that time was in a hospital waiting room waiting for my dad to have some tests run.  I threw my 1st Place book and journal in my bag and took them along.  Sometimes we have to be creative.

We can pray as we wash dishes, fold laundry, drive back and forth for errands or picking kids up.

LBW has some prayer ideas:

-Before prayer, spend a few minutes in silence to prepare for the prayer.  Settle in and be aware of God's presence before starting.  I actually do this already.  I have to take a few minutes to just quiet myself of the activities of the day and settle into a prayerful mind.

-When over-burdened with life and you just can't get the words to form a prayer, try listening to music.  This is so powerful!  I listen to http://www.klove.com/ online.  They have great music and their motto is "Positive and Encouraging".  After listening for a while, I can feel my mood lighten.

-Write out prayers and date them so you can later look back and see how God has answered your prayers.  I sometimes write prayers in my journal.  Usually if I'm greatly bothered and really emotional.  This isn't something I do on a normal basis though.  I know people that write all their prayers and requests.

-Read a hymnbook if you have trouble praising God or being thankful.  It helps to read thoughts of praise and faith that have come from another person's spiritual walk.  Sometimes when I read the words of hymns, I'm amazed at how closely their feelings match mine.  I am amazed at the way the writers were able to put such thoughts and feelings to music and hand them down for generations.  What a great way honor to God.

"Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need."  Hebrews 4:16

Just a reminder:  LBW suggests looking ahead to plan for celebrating Easter.  This year Easter is on April 24th.  By not waiting until the last minute, we can take the time to fully appreciate all that Easter means.

Queen of the Castle ~ Week 7

Week 7 ~ It's OK to Say No:
Managing Our Time as Homemakers

The first thing to remember in time management is that you can't do everything.

Next is having some tools such as calendars, planners, etc. to help you keep track of your tasks.

But mainly you must decide what is important in your life and don't over pack your schedule.  This way you won't neglect the important things in your life to fulfill other people's priorities.

Time is the coin of your life.  It is the only coin you have, and only you can determine how it will be spent.  Be careful lest you let other people spend it for you.  Carl Sandburg
This might mean paring down your list of activities so you can better focus on the few where God is directing your attention.

Then, learn to say "no".  Saying "no" to others is one of the hardest things to do.  We might even have to say no things that we actually really want to do but if it doesn't fit into our priorities and it would take time from something more important, we have to make the best decision for our balance in life.

LBW suggests that when an opportunity or invitation presents itself (especially over the phone) to give yourself some time to think about it before committing.  After weighing your options, you can then make a decision on whether the activity is important enough to be a priority over other things in your life.

The example of Martha and Mary from Luke 10 is given as an example.  I sometimes feel bad for Martha.  She was stuck in a hard place, but listening to Jesus was far more important than making the meal.

It can sometimes be confusing as to what requires our attention.  It takes careful consideration in setting our weekly schedules and activities.

Remember:  You can't do everthing.

"Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil.  So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is."  Ephesians 5:1-17

"Simply Sara" by Hillary Manton Lodge

Plain & Simple Book 2

Simply Sara

Book 1:  "Plain Jayne"

Book Description:

Following up on Plain Jayne, a fun new look at Amish life from the outside in, author Hillary Manton Lodge continues with young Sara Burkholder's perspective on English life and romance in Simply Sara.

Sara, who left her Amish family to live with Jane, discovers that the English world is a bit more challenging than she expected. As she finds a job, buys English clothes, wears makeup, and learns to drive, she begins a journey to becoming the person she might have been had she not been born into an Amish family.

But when romance becomes complicated and school proves difficult, Sara escapes to her Amish sister?s home, wondering if she should return to the life she left. Torn, she seeks answers in prayer, but is the God she is seeking the same in both worlds? What?s a quilt-making, fashion-loving, formerly Plain girl to do when a new way of life starts to change her?

My Thoughts:

This book had:

Book Stores
Books
Quilting
Sewing
Fabric & Fabric Stores
Yarn
Knitting
Crochet
Cooking
Cupcakes
Movie Night
Subarus

Everything I LOVE!  It was the perfect book for someone with my likes and hobbies!

Not to mention the sweet love story that slowly unfolded between Sara and Will.  So sweet.

I enjoyed revisiting Jayne and Levi also.

This was just a great book.  I'm looking forward to the next book from Hillary Manton Lodge!

"Expect the Sunrise" by Susan May Warren

Team Hope Book 3

Expect the Sunrise (Team Hope, Bk 3)

Team Hope Book 1:  "Flee the Night"
Team Hope Book 2:  "Escape to Morning"

Book Description:

Is it an accident . . . or an ambush?

When their plane crashes high in the Alaskan forest, seven survivors face the challenge of a lifetime -- freezing nights, mountain dangers, and injuries. And when suspicions arise about one survivor, they realize their greatest threat is each other.

Mountain rescuer Andee MacLeod and FBI agent Stirling Mac McRae must work together if they hope to survive. But will their secrets keep them apart? They'll have to learn to trust each other if they want to expect the sunrise.

My Thoughts:

I loved all three of the Team Hope books.  Loved them.  Susan May Warren has become one of my favorite, go-to authors.

It was so interesting to "learn" more about survival and Search and Rescue.

Andee was so independent and capable and Mac was so suspicious and cautious.  The romance took a while to really get going but then it grew to love very quickly.

There was lots of action and suspense as well has the interesting interaction and dynamics between people of different character types.  I really had no idea which one was going to turn out to be the terrorist until it actually happened.

The way the members of Team Hope form their own family is so endearing.  I would really love to read Conner's story and even emailed the author to ask if she plans on writing it.  I haven't gotten a reply so far.  lol

This series is definitely worth reading and has really heightened my interest in Christian Suspense.  Lots more books went on my wishlist.

Fruit Punch Cupcakes

These cupcakes were an experiment.

I wanted to bake something to take for the Church fellowship dinner the Sunday before Valentine's Day.  I had some cute Valentine Cupcake Liners but the yellow cake mix I had just didn't seem festive enough.

I did some brainstorming.  Actually as I was looking at my baking cupboard, my Great Value Fruit Punch "Crystal Light" caught my eye.  And that was it.

The recipe below is changed a bit from how I made the icing.  I put a whole container of the powder in the icing and, MAN, did it have some PUNCH to it.  I'd cut that in half if I were making it again.

Fruit Punch Cupcakes

1Yellow or White Cake Mix
1 cup water
1/3 cup oil
3 eggs
1 tub Fruit Punch Drink Mix (1 tub makes 2 qts of drink)

Heat oven to 350 degrees.

Put cake mix and Fruit Punch powder in mixing bowl and mix.  Add the rest of the ingredients and mix well for 2 minutes.

Line muffin tins with papers and fill 2/3 full with cake mixture.

Bake for 18-22 minutes.

Cool completely.

Fruit Punch Icing

1/2 cup Crisco
2 Tablespoons butter
1/4 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
Powdered sugar
1/2 tub Fruit Punch Drink Mix (don't use whole tub unless you want some major PUNCH!)

Combine the first 4 ingredient in a mixing bowl and mix well. Add powdered sugar a bit at a time until you get a nice fluffy consistency. Add Fruit Punch Drink Mix and mix well.  Add more milk if needed. Beat on high until light and fluffy.

Put icing into a ziplock bag to pipe the icing on the cupcakes. Start with a dollop in the center and then start on the outside edge and work toward the middile and up over the center. This gives it some height.

Next I'm going to try Raspberry Lemonade or Grape!

Let me know if you give these a try.  It was a lot of fun to experiment.

"Walking With Women Through the Word" with Wendy Pope
One Year Chronological Bible in the New Living Translation.
February 13- February 19, 2011

NLT One Year Chronological Bible, Large Print Softcover -

This week got a bit hard to read through.  Especially when it started talking about skin conditions and seeping.  GROSS!!

God gave the instructions for the Tabernacle and for making sacrifices.  The priests then carried out these instructions.  Except for Nadab and Abihu and they met a bad end.

There were a few days that I had to double up on my reading.  This week was crazy busy and it just seemed like I couldn't get caught up on anything.

Hopefully this week will be calmer and back to a normal (whatever that is) schedule.

Chapter 13:  Overindulgence
Chapter 14:  Emotional Emptiness
Chapter 15:  The Demon in the Chips Poster

Once again, I had to read the last 2 chapters assigned on Saturday.
I started out strong and read Chapter 13 on schedule.  Actually I read it sitting in the Pittsburgh VA Hospital waiting room while my dad was having a CT Scan.

After that, everything else just seemed to get in the way.  I had it on my list everyday and it just kept getting shoved back.

I did stick to my "plans" pretty well, though.  I have learned a lot in this study.

This is the last week for the Made to Crave study with Melissa Taylor.  Her next online study starts on March 20, 2011 and we will be studying It's No Secret by Rachel Olsen.  I already have my book and am looking forward to starting the study.

We will still be encouraging each other in our MTC journey toward healthiness through Melissa's blog and also on the Facebook page.

I'm going to try to go out with a bang on this study and stay on schedule with my homework not to mention my food and exercise plans!

Say a little prayer for me!
