My Overall Feeling of the Book:

I was so excited to receive a review request for this book and I'm equally excited to share my review with you on the release date!

This book is of epic proportions.  I was pulled into the world of Belle Meade and feel as if I've actually visited there.

I read that it took Tamera Alexander 2 years to research and write this book.  When reading about the setting and the characters it is easy to believe.  Each person, from the General to little Jolene, is given such detail and attention.  I fell in love with them all.


Main Characters:

Olivia Aberdeen:  Olivia has lived a life of obedience even to the point of enduring an arranged marriage to a cruel man.  Olivia is deathly afraid of horses but finds herself living on a thoroughbred farm.  I enjoyed seeing Olivia transform into an assertive woman who stand up for herself and isn't afraid to take a little risk.

Ridley Cooper:  Ridley is a Southern-born Yankee.  He followed his convictions and fought for what he believed to be right even though his 2 brother were fighting on the other side.  His determination to make it through the war and find his way to the Colorado Territory keeps him going.  He is desperate to leave the South and everything in the past behind.

Uncle Bob Green:  Uncle Bob is a former slave who Ridley meets in the the mountains of Tennessee during the war.  Ridley and Uncle Bob form a strong bond as Uncle Bob teaches Ridley the art of training thoroughbreds.  I adore Uncle Bob's character!

One of My Favorite Scenes:

There are so many amazing scenes to choose from.  One of my very favorites is when Olivia and Ridley watch as Dauntless is born.  It is a big turning point in Olivia overcoming her fear of horses.

A Brief Excerpt:

It was so easy for him to lose himself with her.  To enjoy the moment, her laughter, her smile, and the way she sometimes look at him.  And of course, he always enjoyed looking at her.  He'd made it no secret that he was leaving for the Colorado Territory after the yearling sale, and she'd made it no secret that the Colorado Territory was the last place on earth she'd ever like to be.

The Cover:

This cover is absolutely breathtaking!  The curtain frame the whole picture with the beautiful horse in the background.  The dress is gorgeous and her hair is perfect!  All that is missing is Ridley :)

Other Notes:

I say that this book is epic and along with that is the fact that the book is fairly long.  Almost 500 pages.  It took me a little longer to read than the average book but it was WELL worth the time.

You can visit Belle Meade online at www.bellemeadeplantation.com .  I got sucked in, so be careful!  lol  I would love to actually visit there sometime.  I'll put it on my bucket list.

There are some pretty heavy issues in this book.  Slavery, discrimination, abuse, murder, war, etc.

"10 Costumes From the Past"

This was really hard.  I could not for the life of me remember 10 costumes from when I was young.  I even called my Mom and we racked our brains but could only remember 8.  So the last two I'm throwing in we're actually Christmas play costumes :)

A Musing ~ Character Crushes ~ 10/22/12

Each week Miz B at Should Be Reading asks a bookish question to muse over.

Q. "Do you ever get crushes on fictional characters? Name one (or a few), and tell what you liked…"

I had to chuckle at this question!  Isn't this the whole point of reading?  lol  To be drawn into the characters and their lives...and maybe even crush on them?

I just have to watch that I don't try to compare my husband to the heroes in books because then we end up fighting because he isn't the perfect gentlemen, or doesn't say sweet, sappy things all the time.  Because he is a real and perfectly imperfect.

It is very important to remember these characters are just that.  Fiction.  Sometimes the authors make them seems very real with flaws and quirks but in the end, the book will be read and the next book will be started.

I really struggled with reading fictional romances when I first got married because I felt a bit guilty having character crushes.  hehe  As you can see, I've overcome that!

I just keep in mind that the real deal is so much better than a fictional character.  My own love story is much more important than one in a book :)

My Overall Feeling of the Book:

I loved the history in this book!  I don't think I would have fully appreciated it if we hadn't gone to Niagara Falls on 3 years ago on our family vacation.  We took the guided tour and learned so much from our tour guide.  He told us many of the stories that are included in the book.  We visited the Whirlpool and I think the place that most helped me get into this story was visiting the Daredevil Musuem where we actually saw barrels that had gone over the Falls.

This book took me right back to our wonderful visit to Niagara Falls!


Main Characters:

Evangeline Murray:  Evangeline is determined to ride over the Falls in a barrel to bring attention to Women's Rights.  She also wants the fame and fortune that she believes will come with surviving the stunt.  She seemed a bit shallow to me at times but I couldn't help but like her anyway.

Joshua McClaren:  Josh has lived along the Niagara River his whole life and knows it like the back of his hand.  He has pulled countless bodies from the Whirlpool along with rescuing many others.  He doesn't understand why someone would risk their life and lets Evangeline know that he thinks she's a fool.

 

Cornelia Braithewaite:  Cornelia was the main feminist of the movement and was a complete user.  She used Iris de Vere for her money and was willing to risk Evangeline's life all in the name of "the cause".  I think she just wanted the limelight.  So many times I saw major flaws in her philosophy.  What a creep!

One of My Favorite Scenes:

Evangeline's ride over the falls and all the excitement and drama involved!  The build up was perfect and the detailing was excellent.

A Brief Excerpt:

The river widened above the Falls.  The water rushed past, churning across a wide area of rocks and tiny islands.  Looking at the broad, innocent river, Evangeline thought how surprised the first river travelers must have been when their canoes started to gather speed, faster and faster, until there was not stopping them, and the white mist and thunder filled the air; and the water opened up to swallow them.

The Cover:

I like that the cover uses an actual picture of the Falls.  The barrel is such a major part of the story so having it front and center is also appropriate.  The title up the side is a bit odd, though.


Other Notes:

This is a mainstream book and included some coarse language and a few sexual innuendos and references.

There are also some pretty gruesome scenes surrounding the deaths that have occurred at the Falls.

My Cover Crush this week is:

A charming novel about a 40-year-old Brooklyn mother, recently divorced, who starts writing copy for a bakery, discovers a knack for food-related literary puns, and becomes entangled in a love triangle.

Molly Hagan is overwhelmed.

Her husband left her for a younger, blonder woman, her six year-old son is questioning her authority, and now, so is she. In order to pay her Brooklyn rent and keep her son supplied with Pokemon and Legos-not to mention food and clothing-she has to get a job. Fast.

So when an old friend offers Molly a copywriting position at a new bakery, finding romance is just about the last thing on her mind. But the sexy British pastry chef who's heading up the bakery has other thoughts. And so does Molly when she meets the chef's intimidating business partner-who also happens to have a secret that might prevent Molly from getting her own Happily Ever After.

What's New With You ~ 10/19/12

Here's what's new with me this week:


...First I would tell you that I feel blah today.  Just blah.  If I still had a uterus I think it would be that time of the month.  I kept my ovaries so I still have the hormones to deal with.  Sorry, TMI!!


...The girls are home from school today for a Teacher In-Service day.  They took full advantage of staying up late last night and sleeping in this morning.  I also slept in which might have something to do with me feeling blah.  Now I'm hitting the Dr. Pepper to try to get some motivation.


...Speaking of my surgery, it has officially been 6 weeks!  Yay!  I'm feeling great and have started upping my walking distance.  I started with 1 mile for a few days, then 1.5 miles and now I'm at 2 miles.  If I could just get my eating under control.  Stupid sweet tooth!


...Last Saturday my cousin, Steph, played in a 3-on-3 basketball competition.  It was organized by a local girl for her senior project.  All the proceeds went to Make-A-Wish Foundation.  It was a lot of fun to watch Steph play.  It had been a while since she had played any sort of competitive sport and she said it was a wake-up call.  I told her I get those wake-up calls too, but I just hit the snooze!


...I can't believe I'm typing this but I read my first Christmas book of the year already!  It is called "A Merry Little Christmas" by Anita Higman.  My review is due October 30 or I probably wouldn't have read it so soon.  It happened to be the book I was reading for Dream Cast Thursday.  Here's who I picked to star in the movie:

 ...I've been thinking about my Christmas list lately.  Mostly due to reading a Christmas book already!  Anyway, a Goodreads friend gave me a link to a very interesting idea called "The Jesus Gifts".  The idea is to give 4 gifts that represent the gifts that Jesus received.  I think we're going to do this for the girls this year.  There is a little poem to go along with the gifts to make sure your kids realize the significance:

...And last, I've been having fun this week with another of my book giveaways.  The main character in the book is in the Witness Protection program and had to change her name from Deidre to Annalise.  As part of the entry, I'm asking for the participants to tell me what they would change their name to.  So fun!  They've said everything from Bunny Snow and Princess Carabo to Haylee and Alexis.  So, I've been trying to think of what my alias would be.  It is just too hard!  So, tell me.  What would your Witness Protection name be?

Q.  How did you find out about book blogging and what made you decide to start one yourself? 

By accident.  Plain and simple.

I discovered my first ever blog in a quilting forum.  A fellow member had a blog to document and showcase her quilts.  I decided I wanted to do that too.

Then I decided that I wanted to use my blog to keep track of the books that I read and my thoughts on them.  So, I did.  I also added in movies, recipes, the kids etc.  Kinda like an online diary.  I never dreamed that anyone else would be interested enough to read it.

Later, I discovered the book blogging community.  Who knew!?!  Other people to talk books with!  Oh, Happy Day!

And that, my friends, is how it started almost 4 years ago :)

Movie Night Link-up, Anyone?????

 

  This is basically a feeler post to see if anyone would be interested in taking part in a weekly link-up discussing movie recommendations or (warnings!).   At our house, we try to have a weekly Family Movie Night at least once a week.  It is a wonderful time spent together as a family.  Sometimes, the hubby and I will get a movie to watch after the kids go to bed.  Every once in a blue moon, we'll actually hit the theater!   What I have in mind for this link-up is a Thursday post that recommends movies for the upcoming weekend.  It can be any genre, but nothing erotic, please!  You don't have to post yours on Thursday.   You can link-up from any day.   You can post about a movie you've seen recently, one you want to see, or even a classic that you think everyone should watch.  You could include your thoughts, likes, dislikes, target audiences, age appropriateness, rating etc.   If this would be something you would like to participate in, leave me a comment so I can get a feel for the interest.   Also, if you have any ideas or suggestions, I'd love to hear them :)

Book Review ~ LFYI Prince Edward Island Canada by Susan Page Davis

My Overall Feeling of the Book:

This was a nice, sweet story of two people who are very different yet very alike.  This book was an easy read with princes, dukes, earls, farm-girls and a few Cinderella moments.

I enjoyed learning more about Prince Edward Island as really didn't know anything about it before.  As I've said in other reviews, I love when a book makes me want to do research to learn more about a certain subject.


Main Characters:

Molly Orland:  Molly has lived on the family farm her entire life.  When her father is injured, she takes a job as a maid to earn extra income to help her family make ends meet.  She is used to being an independent person and not a servant.

 

Peter Stark:  Peter travels to PEI as an assistant to the Earl of Washburn.  The Earl is actually Peter's uncle but can't acknowledge him as such without causing a scandal.  Peter grew up fighting to make good life for his mother and isn't used to being around aristocracy, let alone a prince.

One of My Favorite Scenes:

I loved the scene when Molly is trying to return the borrowed top hat and suit coat to Peter.  She has to be super-stealthy and make her way through the Governor's house to Peter's room and back down to the servants area without getting caught.


A Brief Excerpt:

Molly's chest ached.  Go to work at the governor's house, among strangers?  She would have people critically watching everything she did.  And would others look down on her if she became a servant?  But if this was the one thing she could do that would most help the family in this time of need, of course she would do it.

It Would Have Been Better If:

There ends up being a "connection" between Peter and Molly.  I would have rathered it be a bit more distant.


The Cover:

The cover is beautifully sweet.  I love the water breaking along the rocks.  The dress Molly is wearing is just as described in the book which is a big deal for me.

People say that I look like my Mom but I also have my Dad's eye-color and body type.

3. Is there anything in your future that seems challenging, daunting, or "larger than life"?

Losing enough weight to be within the "healthy weight" limit for my height.  Such a struggle!  (See above about me having my Dad's body type and slow metabolism...)

4. Do you have any big projects for this season? (DIY/household/craft or sewing/home business/ whatever you consider a project)

Just to get the yard cleaned up for the winter.  This includes getting the furniture off the deck, the trampoline taken down, etc.

watch my oldest daughter be baptized by my husband this summer.  Unexplainable joy!
