Book Blogger Hop ~ Banned Books ~ 10/5/12

HAPPY FRIDAY, EVERYONE!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Book Blogger Hop
Today the BBH is being hosted at Soon Remembered Tales.
Banned Books Week ends on the 6th. How do you feel about books being challenged to be banned from libraries or schools? Have you read any banned books?
My answer is divided.  I don't think books should be banned from the general public.  I think that infringes on rights.  Whatever an adult wants to read, they should be able to do so.
However, I do think there are books that should be banned from schools.  Just as there are movies that aren't appropriate for younger viewers, there are books that are not appropriate for younger readers.  And I feel VERY strongly about these books being required reading for classes.
I am very conservative on this issue.  As a parent, I keep a close eye on what my children watch and read.  There will be time enough when they are grown for them to read these books if they so choose.  Until then, it is my job to guide them.
Honestly, I have to admit, that I don't even know what books are on the banned list.  I was thinking the other day about looking it up.  Maybe I'll do that now :)
Have a great day!
  1. Now that my children are all adults with children of their own I no longer have to keep tabs on what they are reading. After googling what the 100 top banned books were I found I had only read three of them, not because they are banned books, but because most of the banned books were not in genres I read anyway..
  2. I LOVE LOVE LOVE to read, but don't have time to read more than what's already on my extensive list. The one interesting thing I did find out was that TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD was once on the "banned" list. I love that book :)
  3. I respect your desire to protect and guide your children and I fully agree that it's a parent's job to do so. What I don't understand (and I'm not saying you do this or agree with this), is when a work of literature gets pulled out of a classroom for a smattering of choice words or even a single scene that might make a few uncomfortable. I personally believe that the overall message and content of a book should be considered when determining if a book is appropriate for a certain age group. Especially when a book is being taught by a teacher who is also there to teach and guide and explain what a book is all about. There are books I feel a child might be ready for earlier if it is read with a parent or in class, but maybe they're not ready to read it independently. I feel if anyone makes an objection to a book, they should consider the book as a whole, rather than dissect it, pulling out a little piece here or there as for their reasoning.
  4. I didn't know which books were on the list either, but once I looked....oh my. I was required to MANY of them when I was in high school. But obviously they were not banned at that time. :)
    Stop by my blog if you like to see the ones I was required to read. My link is below.
    Happy Hopping.
  5. My kid isn't old enough to read, but I'm probably going to be pretty lenient about what he reads. I definitely respect your stance on watching what your kids read.
    I definitely agree that parents should be the ones to regulate books and not the government.
